De Gea has delivered 8 years of consistent top performances in a United shirt, 2/3 months of iffy form can be excused. The bloke isn't at the tail end of his career either, so to think he won't get back to his usual best is foolish.

Not really foolish. He may well get back to that. Or he may not. A lot of pressure on him this season to up his form because when a GK is in shaky form it can be a huge issue

He's been average for the Spanish and gets it both barrels from their media and yet he puts in top quality performances for the club. This isn't new territory for him, he'll get back to normal.

I don’t understand why Ole making him his only target means you can’t criticize the price when their are better players available for a similar price?

Koulibaly, De Ligt, Kimpembe, Manolas, Romagnoli, Ruben Dias are players that we’re all attainable for united imo that wouldn’t cost a great deal more than Maguire all are better.
In my opinion anyway.

No one is saying the price is fair. I think we all agree we’re overpaying. But there are reasons why we may have to overpay and at the end of the day, if he succeeds for us I doubt anyone will bring up the price again

Yeah you could see that VVD had the potential to be the best defender in the world though, and we’d also royally piiissed Southampton off after tapping him up, so that tacked an extra 10 mil on the price tag for us.
There’s just not the same potential with Maguire imo. I don’t think he’s all that much better than Bailly.
Bailly is an absolute liability who also can’t stay fit to save his life
Maguire has a superhuman ability to stay fit which is another great reason to bring him in.

How can you be a journeyman at 23?
And i also remember there being great surprise that Saints got him when they did, both arsenal and United were linked with him when he was at Celtic.

One of my mates is a staunch Celtic fan and he was not that impressed with him.
I didn't think he was all that at Southampton. But in all fairness he had a superb season last year.
Comparing Van Dijk and Maguire is like comparing Rio Ferdinand and Phil Jones.
I don't rate Maguire that highly to be honest. Certainly not £80m high.
However, and it may just be me saying this to comfort myself, what I believe the thinking is with him is that we're getting him for some perceived leadership (didn't Phelan make him Hull captain?) and organisation skills, for his ability in the air and for his ability in carrying the ball forward.
I'll stand by my opinion and say we shouldn't be paying anywhere near £80m for him however I do hope I'm wrong and he's a success.
We have really gone down hill in identifying or buying quality CB's of late.
Buchanan, McQueen, Bruce, Pally, Yip Yap, Rio and Vidic to Jones, Rojo, Mike, Bailly and Lindelof.

I'm not sold on Maguire at all but I'm willing to wait and see how he plays for United (if he signs) before putting him in the bin.
