Why Don't The Players Just Refuse?!

You answered your own question. It requires bravery and leadership to see something is not working and not be a robot. Twice, we got away with it. After the first I'd say "meh it happens". After the second...it becomes more like "it's not our day to keep doing this". Switch it up.

I also dont get why we are playing so deep in our half. The defence needs to move up 10 to 15 meters and the Midfield needs to do the same. Otherwise you have those lovely gaps we saw today. Fack

First ask your self why thats a tactic! Then if you understand why its necessary will answer your question.

The entire Arsenal roster has next to zero aerial presence outside our small collection of Centre Backs. So that practically rules out retaining any possession after booting the ball upfield.

We might get lucky and win the odd second ball, but then again, we don't close any space down, do we?

It's obvious why we have to build everything from the back. Too bad Sokratis has a pair of hockey sticks for legs.

Goal kicks don't have to be won by the attacking team. If you get your players up the pitch and compete and pressure, you will win 2nd balls and intercept opposition passes and win tackles - especially against teams who aren't blessed with technical players. Secondly, if you mix up your goal kicks, you become less predictable meaning the opposition don't have it as a tactic to ALWAYS press you, so you can still pass out from the back when the opposition learn not to expect it. The problem is when you start each goal kick with your 2 CB's in the 6-yard box close to the keeper, you're inviting the opposition to come and press. We do it in the dumbest way I've ever seen any team try to execute it. Incredibly dumbly.

Its not only that. We used to have the same issue with Giroud.

The only way to break through a high press is to pass through it. You can't really carry the ball through it because CM swam at your runner and you end up losing the ball. You need two midfield players who are able to pivot under pressure and pass forward. Then because the opposition have a lot of players committed and your forwards, especially if they are fast are able to get in behind them.

We have Xhaka. And today Watford knew it and focussed on Gwen. That was the end because it was the gameplan. As soon as Emery took off Ceballos who was doing that in the first half, we were pinned in and it was only a matter of time that Watford forced mistakes or scored from open play.

Whether the tactic is necessary is irrelevant if you can't do it. One of your pet hates of AW was his constant trying to bang square pegs into round holes, to no avail.

That's what we're doing trying to play out from the back with those players. They're not good enough. Might be able to work it with others but today it was an obvious no from the start. No way you're telling me you think Emery was correct to choose that tactic.

yes. I don't see why Emery continues to select a player like Xhaka and telegraphs to the opposition what we are going to do.

As I was saying in the other thread. I am fast losing faith in Emery. Taking off Ceballos was the giant mistake.

I want to see us start picking Ceballos ahead of Ozil and never playing both together.
