No, I'm saying comparing him and Messi based on who is more indispensable (which is what that poster was doing when he said he'd rather keep VVD than swap him for Messi when Liverpool already have a great forward line) would be a bad way to compare their value. I was saying that not swapping VVD for Messi would be because Liverpool have arguably the best front 3 in Europe while their quality at CB bar VVD isn't exactly world class. You can't use this as a basis to compare 2 players' contributions to their teams.
Can have no complaints if Messi does win it, on the other hand VVD deserves it too. Ramos deserved to win it one of the years he was carrying RM in the CL

This is deluded nonsense. Mertesacker was the slowest defender we ever had but rarely got dribbled. His PL average most seasons was getting dribbled past 0.2 times per game - basically getting dribbled once every 5 games. In the 2013/2014 CL season, he was dribbled once in games. Check the stats of most defenders who play the sweeping, deepest role, and they rarely get dribbled.
The VVD thing about not getting dribbled in the CL was overrated crap. Pepe dribbled him twice when we played you earlier this season and Pepe is hardly Maradonna.

It's a myth that this Barca side were poor. They are a excellent team who should have won the CL last season if it was not for Anfield facking them up.

He dragged Barca to a great win at Camp Nou and put chances on a plate for the likes of Dembele and Vidal who missed. He put another couple of chances on a plate in the 2nd leg for Suarez and Alba who missed (though he himself missed one strange sitter early in the Anfield game where he failed to shoot with the goal gaping). Over the course of the 2 legs of that contest, he was by far the best player.

I can see both sides of the arguments that people have put forward to be fair.
Argument for Messi - "Was the best player in the world at football in the last year"
Argument for Van Dijk - "I am a Liverpool fan therefore have diahorrea coming out of my brain and mouth"

La Liga is a shte league with shte defenders. Watching midget centre backs who are very slow in 1v1 says everything about that league.
Mustafi is a prime example of a defender who was very good at Valencia but shte at Arsenal.
Savic was an average defender at City but did well at Atletico M.

No, I'm saying comparing him and Messi based on who is more indispensable (which is what that poster was doing when he said he'd rather keep VVD than swap him for Messi when Liverpool already have a great forward line) would be a bad way to compare their value. I was saying that not swapping VVD for Messi would be because Liverpool have arguably the best front 3 in Europe while their quality at CB bar VVD isn't exactly world class. You can't use this as a basis to compare 2 players' contributions to their teams.

Can have no complaints if Messi does win it, on the other hand VVD deserves it too. Ramos deserved to win it one of the years he was carrying RM in the CL
