Out of the four films listed in the OP, I'd say The Thing is the best remake, vastly surpassing the original

Hang on, wasn’t there a 50’s the thing, and 80’s one and a 10’s reboot?

If you mean the 80’s one, that’s one of the best horror films ever, the special effects are grotesquely amazing. 10/10 film imo.

Yeah I mean the 80's remake. The last reboot was an absolute stinker

The Departed.

Also Blood In Blood Out is loosely based on a true story, which was originally turned into the film American Me.

Unpopular opinion - I quite liked the Planet of the Apes (2001) remake with Mark Wahlberg

Nowhere near the original, but an entertaining film with a cool ending

Where do we stand with famous books eg A Christmas Carol, Pride and Prejudice, It etc.

Or famous monsters eg King Kong, Godzilla etc.

Or famous comic book characters eg pretty much every superhero

Are all their films remakes of the original movie or are they adaptations of the literature, are they reboots?

Do they qualify as remakes if the source film is more famous than the literature? eg Godfather

It starts to get a bit confusing

Cape Fear (1991) with De Niro is definitely a good film, unfortunately I haven't seen the original

The Manchurian Candidate (2004) is a decent remake, but the ending was pretty weak. The original (1962) was comfortably better

Never seen Get Carter remake, original was great

Dredd I’ve discussed earlier

Gone in Sixty Seconds - yes I preferred the remake, other than the car chase, I didn’t enjoy the original.
Saw it a long time ago though.

I’m sure I read somewhere that ‘Heat (1995)’ is a remake. I liked the Al Pacino/De Niro version but never seen the original

I think Heat is the feature to the TV movie, ‘LA Takedown.

Granted I've not seen It Part 2, but the first It is better than the TV movie. Apart from Curry's performance, everything is done better by the remake.

I think the thing that stands out the most to me is the original tv movie has stood the test of time in a way. At least by cementing a spot in my mind. The new films while enjoyable in its own way, probably wont hold up well. There is nothing in the film that pops out or that I can even recall being creepy or dark enough to get to me. The OG at least has a cheesy dream like effect that made it feel off and also Curry stealing the show.
