Reality needs to set in

We need to listen: people like the PFA and players need to listen. Fans need to listen.

"We face the danger of losing clubs and leagues as finances collapse."

"the potential overall financial impact is huge"

"Time is pressing as football burns through its cash reserves with no sign yet of a resumption of the game. Pointing fingers serves no purpose."

Its very clear that while we LFC fans are happy our club has reversed its decision to furlough based on strong feedback there are danger signs flashing as red as our shirts.

Its not about titles. Its about securing the future of football as it is about securing the future of the whole economy.

Its april 7th, its a month since the last games. people should take note. If we don't get a grip of the pandemic and rest our economies we won't have many businesses left never mind football.

"It is time for the stakeholders to agree common cause to save our game. Contribute. Football is a team game and now is the time for teamwork."

Players and PFA need to stop whining about thier money and realise there won't be more coming after it if they don't wake up.

The longer the break is the more chance of us seeing a very different landscape in a few years.
The European ban led to the top clubs looking for a way to secure their status and that led to the Premier League and Champions League.
This could be the starting point of big changes.
I predict a 16 team PL, a 16 team PL2, a change in lower leagues, a larger CL among other things in about 4 or 5 years.

Well. this virus won't lead to a european super league in the short term purely as travel is likely to be difficult for several months up to at least 18 months imo.

If we see less clubs in the league it won't be for nice reasons and i could see reserve sides entering the league structure. to bolster numbers but only if teams can afford it and fans will follow them.

Zero point seeing city reserves in the championship with 3k followers.

In any event I think people need to start thinking about REALLY BIG CLUBS failing here.

The clubs may need to start thinking about it. But as a fan holed up, no masks, having to go the shopping, I won't be thinking much about it, and in any event there's nothing I can do about it.

The sooner Season 2019/20 is stopped, cancelled, null & void, the better it will be for football.

The ridiculous contortions UEFA & The Premier League are tying themselves up in in order to find a solution/justification in continuing this season will result, as Greg Clark rightly points to, many lost Clubs and threatens entire League systems.

He who hesitates, ma$ter bates.

.ove on, keep it clean and clear, start 2020/21 in the Autumn with everything reset to August 2019 starting positions.

This will allow the whole sport to reorganise finances with a whole season's Income to come.

It is the only way.

Trying to prolong this season will prolong the agony, create huge problems for next season and beyond, and do massive damage to individual clubs and the game as a whole.

Greg Clarke's message is very good as far as it goes. But it's time to take the bull by the horns, ditch this season and plan for a fresh start next season.

I think the reserve team or "B" team approach is a good idea to introduced. For years now I've wanted to see this in the English game. Some of the big clubs have larger reserve team budgets than the championship and league one first teams. Introduce b teams by letting PL teams purchase/take ownership of the a struggling local team to consolidate their reserve team with. Rebrands/cobrands are non-e issue if the club is going to collapse anyway. The one issue will be that that club would never be able to get into the same league as the parent club,, so fans may not be happy, but again better than disappearing into thin air.

Exactly.

Look at EURO 2020. Cancelled. Huge costs and disruption. Do it next year instead, regroup, rebudget. Move on.

It seems everyone is still committed to finishing the season when it is safe to do so which is good.

They're not though Firmino, plenty want the season to continue for sporting reasons, but trust me, the second a deal is done to secure/restructure TV money, the season will be cancelled.

I am not sure anyone gives a flying .... about football /sport right now. When we get out of this (prob 2021), them of course it will become important again. But mot now

so you've managed to ignore the massive revenue gap that will create and assume that we can start in August like nothing happened.

ignore liverpool's title, nobody cares. it's all about tv revenue.

ignore the talk about promotions and relegation too. it's all about tv money.

posted on 7/4/20

I honestly do wonder reading the above.

do people not get the basic maths, none of this is about 19/20 titles.

it's about clubs not having the money to pay the wages if this continues and the potential for tv companys to pull a canal+ type stunt.

it's literally about clubs folding yet some people seem to think come august things can reset like nothing happened. it seems reality has indeed not actually set in.

the point is that the reserve teams would displace functional teams.

if there are only 60 functional clubs then it wont be an issue sadly.

the reality of reserve football in spain and italy is that these teams dont dominate the championship level. they are younger teams who have to fight and they change personnel relatively quickly so never really build consistently.

no I suppose we are meant to indulge the footballers and bankrupt the clubs cos the reality is if we are here in 2021 theres not one single club that can afford 200 odd million in wages with zero money coming in.

clearly reality of this hasn't sunk in.

maybe we need a leeds type bankruptcy for people to wake up.

if an administrator steps into a club they will furlough everyone and pay no top up and then start talking about 80-90% contract reductions or players will be let go.

TV money bridges the gap.

Liverpool are unlucky.

And yes, I am sorry to say, but it is all about the money.

posted on 7/4/20

We're unlucky in that the season has been interrupted but there are bigger things going on at the moment. We can look forward to our prize when it is safe for football to be played again. Let's hope it can resume in some form over the summer at some point as it would be a sign of things gradually moving towards some form of normality again.

Scarf still hoping for the season to be cancelled...

Way way more chance of 20/21 being cancelled and this one being 19/21.

No footy till February next year is sensible.

Sensible for who?

Ridiculous.

You have no idea how precious football club finances are.

posted on 7/4/20

If it goes until February then there is the possibility that restarting this season will be pointless and alternatives will have to be found.
