Amazing how many people have posted on this thread but people are gebrally siding with WHO or trump.
How about both have behaved in an incompetent manner?

Southampton university have said that WHOs delay in raising the alarm, via Taiwan, has caused at least 66% more cases. Maybe upto 95%.

Seems obvious WHO have been deflecting this in an embarrassing fashion, in much thhe same way trump is deflecting his own criticism. Under their prev leader it's simply wouldn't have happened. SARS showed that. They handled that expertly.

That WHO tweet regarding the cover up and their being no evidence of it in China is always going to out blood on their hands, especially as Taiwan has made it clear they informed them in December. That's why WHO won't discuss Taiwan. WHO shouldn't let politics dictate who they accept information or concerns from, especially if it effects the people they are funded to protect and advise.

But what would be the motive for WHO to do this? Perhaps their leader was influenced by China?

WHO made it clear that they we're getting info from Chinese sources. People are acting as if the WHO did its own teats and surveys and then misled the world.

WHO were misled by China as was all the world because nations have not given/have taken away powered to enable the WHO to enforce stuff. They got the info from China and relayed it as they are supposed to do. They have no powers to confirm the truth and they have clearly stated they are quoting the Chinese. What more do you want? Their powers are now oversight and regulation. They can't control what China do or say.

If you want that to change then elect leaders who realise that international institutions need strengthening, not constant attacks and being blackmailed by the threat of being dissolved.

Prof Stephen Turner, head of the department of microbiology at Melbourne’s Monash University, says what’s most likely is that virus originated in bats.

But that’s where his certainty ends, he says.

On the hypothesis that the virus emerged at the Wuhan live animal market from an interaction between an animal and a human, Turner says: “I don’t think it’s conclusive by any means.”
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Lots of people have been claiming 2+2 = 5 however.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
I agree, I'm not absolving China of any blame in this but people just jump to conclusions straight away over it when you've got scientists actually saying different.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
These things are notoriously difficult to investigate.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
This particular reassorted viral strain has only been out for a few months. Hardly long enough for it to pick up any more exotic genetic material as it hops across different species.

The only thing standing in the way of any conclusive investigation is simply the politics of blame.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
We don't know how it got into humans.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
We've been able to track down the origins of particular zoonotic virus outbreaks like Ebola within months.

I wouldn't be surprised if the scientists in China hadn't already done this.

I enjoyed my time in China but I have to accept they have manipulated the system and be critical of them when I feel it's justified. If WHO are going to serve their purpose in an unbiased manner then it should be mandatory that they validate all info they broadcast.

During SARS they were super stringent regarding all the Asian countries and the info they provided WHO.
It seems they simply accepted what China told them and relayed that back to the world as their own view. That alone stinks of incompetence tbh.

I'm not criticising the good things they have done but it's fair to say that it is their job to validate data and put out warnings. They refuse to discuss and will not discuss why they ignored Taiwan's warnings. When you look at the current Taiwan/China crisis it seems a bit of a coincidence. China should not be able to determine who is a member of WHO.

If it is their job to act as the world's eyes and ears regarding outbreaks it's obvious they failed to address Taiwan concerns and the reification's have been massive. If WHO aren't able to post info they can validate they should simply not post at all in my view. And if they cannot do one of their primary tasks then they are no longer fit for this purpose.

I'm not disputing if the system is broken but the fact is their actions have cost lifes. Even the tweet they posted, stating it was info from China, that was 3 weeks after Taiwans warnings. That's huge and needs an explanation I feel.

It finally dawned on him last week that he has been lied to with this virus. he is now doing what me and the Mrs have been doing for the last five weeks.

-----
Thats what I'm saying. You see the name "World Health Organization" and you assume that's the case. Believe you me, it depends and isn't always mandatory.

In fact, in some situations they are relegated to nothing more than some sort of conduit where its mandatory they relay what they're told without having powers to force a fact check.

WHO isn't a watchdog per se. They interfere as far as they are allowed to. Nations have powers to restrict the WHO and I'm sure China used these powers to render them useless.

Otherwise what does the WHO gain by misleading the world? Only China has the motive to do that.

In addition to allowing Covid to take us over, China has also ruined the reputation of the WHO and if the WHO is further weakened then an immeasurable amount of good work will be lost and we will be paying for that in future.

But if the world HEALTH organisation fails the world with horrendously incorrect information which has directly contributed towards the spread of the virus, why would you trust them to get anything else right?

Which WHO info was "horrendously incorrect"?

Just realised Colemanballs already posted a similar link and the WHO apologists haven’t commented since
----------------------------------------------------------------------

Have you actually read the article.

Unless Im missing something the WHO reported the information they we're given and were a week late maybe with upgrading tHe threat in effect. Didnt label it a pandemic until it was one.

I'm struggling to see what they've done which is so bad.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

Yet, you are considerably less forgiving with the UK government who make the same excuse?

Anyway I will just leave this here...

https://www.theguardian.com/world/2020/mar/30/senior-who-adviser-appears-to-dodge-question-on-taiwans-covid-19-response
----------------------------------------------------------------------

Im less forgiving of this Government because they cut 17k hospital beds, stopped nursing bursaries, managed a 40,000 staff shortage in the NHS and applauded not giving them a payrise before we went into this and now stand there in front of signs saying 'protect the NHS' as a lack of PPE kills the staff that are left.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

Did you learn that all off one flyer?

Load of crap, as usual. With zero context or informed insight.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

It's all completely true. In fact it's weird you say otherwise as it's common knowledge.

Why did they fail to do that?

They would have if they could have. They're not stupid.

The wording of the tweets should hive it awaym they take care to say this is info from China. If they had any powers to condyctbyheir own observations and tests then they would have given their own info.

So everyone is waiting for the WHO to tell them what's going on because its the WHO, duuuh! But WHO has no means or powers to ascertain anything. The best you get is a tweet relaying the info they are receiving and with quotes so that you know it's not their research.

The WHO wants to protect you from China. If you want the WHO to be able to protect you then lobby for international organisations to be strengthened.

What should they have done? You need to look closer. Why was Taiwan in the know? China tried to keep them in the dark too. Its because they are neighbours with China, have a lot of trade and travel with Wuhan. They had inside info, factual and reliable and because of this they made great decisions.

This is what the WHO did not and could not have. They had no inside info etc and had no powers to acquire this info. You get what you paid for.

Just as a matter of interest Robbing, when was the last time the NHS was fully staffed.

Also the NHS has 1.1 million full time and 400,000 part time and temp staff working within it.A 40,000 staff shortage means it's 2.8% short off being fully staffed which in such a huge organisation is well within normal limits.

Because they don’t recognise Taiwan’s political status due to influence from China.
