Pawl- I look forward to changing your name re our voiding bet for a month

You actually thought the season would be voided
----------------------------------------------------------------------
I certainly didn't think it would restart with this many people still dying everyday.

If I'm guilty of anything its underestimating the greed of the clubs and the desperation of Sky.

Putting the huge integrity issue to one side everytime I've tried to watch a German game I've found myself turning it off but the fact that its rubbish without a crowd doesn't seem to matter?
----------------------------------------------------------------------
I’ve only watched the Leipzig games tbf because of Werner and they’ve been a good watch. I can’t really comment on the others.

Re the voiding issue, the PL is a multi billion pound industry, you didn’t really think they would say we’ve an outbreak here let’s just scrap a 75% completed season and start a new season as planned or when it’s safe

----------------------------------------------------------------------
If somebody had said to me back in March when the lockdown started that football would be back in June with over 300 dying a day I would of said don't be ridiculous.

I love the way that those with a vested interest like Gary Lineker and Alan Smith say that it will give the country a much needed morale boost.

Football with no crowd is about as morale boosting as getting stuck in a lift with Greta Thunberg.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
It will likely be lower than that by the time it actually starts again. Looking at the current trend it shouldn't be too long before we start seeing the number of daily deaths fall into double figures on some days.

Likely .. shouldn't be too long ...

Let's be honest. That should've happened before they started planning football games. All about those TV contracts.

As long as they can bring it back safely that is the main thing.

You think the same about

Rugby league
Horse racing
Snooker
Garden centres
McDonald’s
KFC
Subway
Schools
Building sites
Manufacturing sites
Amazon

I don’t get this obsession with football, jealousy is a terrible trait.

I’ve worked every day, wish I had the protection these footballers are getting.

What I don’t think people understand is, football is fooked if it doesn’t start soon.

SAME AS EVERY OTHER INDUSTRY

Look past the players.

There probably close to 100000 people, who’s jobs are linked to or rely on football

I don't think that's really true, though is it. The PL alone has over a billion in the bank. If it came down to it they could pay out the clubs for the TV money. Most of the clubs would be absolutely fine, those that would struggle with cash flow in the top flight will easily get short-term loans based on their earning potential.

It's the clubs lower in the pyramid that are in real danger of going under, but TV money doesn't impact them nearly as much so they're not in a rush to restart. If they're going to finish the season at all.

Rugby league isn't scheduled to start until mid August, horse racing is morally bankrupt anyway, so that's no surprise.. snooker is literally 2 blokes and a tv crew. The rest are arguably essential, or have had to work throughout.

I hope you had reasonable protection at work

They will eat through a billion pounds within a few months.

The Fa are p@ssing money.

Rugby league started last week, in Australia.

What

Houses building essential ???
Mcd essential ???
Garden centre essential ???
Car showrooms essential ???

They have all gone back for ONE reason and ONE reason ONLY

MONEY

Operating costs are the club's concern - the PL wouldn't keep them afloat forever but that's not what we're talking about - we're discussing whether they have to finish the season or go under. The outstanding TV payments are 760m or something. It's the difference between necessity and greed.

The situation is different in Australia, clearly. Just like Germany, which has restarted football but only has around a fifth of the deaths the UK has seen.

Okay maybe you're right - they're not all essential. The economy does have to restart of course. Though lots of people (teachers for example) are concerned that it's too soon. It's not fair to say everyone is okay with everything reopening and just has an issue with football. I think that entertainment should be low on the list of priorities.

I have no problem with the view, that we are opening upto early.

Not my view, but I can understand why someone thinks that way, for me its a fine balance, hard choices.

But I just don’t think you can pick and choose what you think should open because it doesn’t suit your club.

If football is safe, don’t understand why it shouldn’t start.

And when I say safe, I mean within reason.

If football is safe, don’t understand why it shouldn’t start.

---

There's a few reason's it's more complicated than the players being safe. There's everyone else involved in putting games on having to go back to work.. but let's say for the sake of argument they're all self-distancing etc so that's okay.

Then you have the emergency services. Will fans turn up outside the stadiums to see the players/celebrate wins/demand the owners leave etc etc? Tough one. Will there be available medical staff & ambulances to take players to hospital etc? Are there spaces in local hospitals that wouldn't put players going there at risk of infection?

I'm sure all of these concerns can be addressed. The reason I think they're starting too soon - apart from headlines - is that they've committed to a restart date without having the answers. This tells me that the end of July date on the TV contracts is more important than all of the above. They're trying to plan something but they actually can't.

Bale

Am glad it hasn’t turn into b@llocks and decent debate 👍

There no doubt it’s all about the money and they are just trying to scramble something together.

It’s all about the money and the long term brand.

The problem they have also got is, Spain, Italy and Germany are all going to be playing.

Football can change, and change quickly, look how Italy went from the dominant force to nothing within years, and it never really recovered (bar juve)

They will be worried about these leagues taking market share from worldwide rights.

LIW

However this works out it's going to leave a mark on football as an industry, for sure. Without fans at games I don't see how some of the lower league clubs will survive. The PL chief dodged the question about giving money to the EFL to help clubs that are struggling so I get the feeling they'll let them go under.

Assuming they don't I can see the rich clubs having their pick of players from lower leagues, as the clubs will have no choice but to sell to pay the bills. I guess restarting helps the PL avoid that issue with clubs from the leagues you've mentioned.

My concern about the headlines is that public opinion could quickly turn if they're seen to be playing while hundreds of people are dying a day. It won't matter if the players are tested and safe, or if Aguero scores 5 a game, if the press coverage is negative and people don't watch. That would be far worse for the brand than waiting for a few weeks until everyone feels better about it. I could well be wrong about that though, certainly among the PL's global fanbase I'm in the minority, but that's how I see it.

No I agree, football as to be careful.

I do think they get a lot of unfair press at times.

But the PFA, as been a disgrace, players having or gy parties during lockdown and the perception of greed, isn’t a good look.

Got to be careful how it is all handled

Typically with work I was booking for between 30-50 before all this.

It was a bad analogy anyway. You got me.
