227M for Sancho

I always wonder why players allow agents to ask for so much. Making money off their backs is one thing, making that obscene amount is crazy.

posted on 7/10/20

It's going to be similar for any player costing that kind of amount. I would assume apart from the odd outlier the fees are worked out on percentages signed into contracts.

These headline amounts are always silly, though. They likely include a bunch of stuff like loyalty clauses, an extra year on the end etc. It's decent PR from United leaking this, though.

You set the ball rolling when you paid Pogba's agent £24m.

posted on 7/10/20

United didn't set any ball rolling. It's Liverpool and City who consistently, year after year, pay the most in agent fees. Still ruining football

Does sound like silly money but I would imagine those are the types of fees you’ll need to pay for top players and any club will know that.

If the club felt this was too much and it seemed clear Dortmund had no desire to budge then we should have left it straight away. If definitely seemed as though we spent a long time tying to get it to work without any success.

because they are 20 -25 year old kids and the biggest influence on them is probably their agent

If he says "you will earn £78m from this contract" they probably stop listening at this point.

The truth is there is a degree of risk with every signing especially a young attacker whose success has come playing in a foriegn league. To ignore this risk and pay silly money is irresponsible.

Utd biggest mistake is not that they do not pay silly prices but they spend too long on the negotiating table with theses clubs instead of moving on to plan B very quickly. Then find themselves settling for Plan Z

Yes, certainly does provide some rationale for fans.

Might also be laying the groundwork for a future deal, as any other suitors will also cool their interest.

I suspect in the current climate this kind of deal is not affordable, no matter how rich the club, and Dortmund demanding the entire fee up-front didn't help.

Maybe a more realistic deal can be reached in the next window ... or other targets emerge.

Don't forget after 2-3 years he would want a contract renewal with more money and the agent takes his cut out of that too.

I think you may well have dodged a bullet with Sancho. He has talent, but he has attitude too. His social media is a bit reminiscent of the worst of Lingard and Pogba. He could be very disruptive in an unsettled dressing room.

We should be more subtle and pay them off the books like a certain club I know clearly does.

this
media and pundits work up certain types of fans into believing this deal should be happening. Sadly, utd do not do enough to stop the unrealistic expectation, it is almost like the people in charge enjoy the attention.

Should be the players who pay them not the clubs.

An actor has an agent and usually pays them 10%. It's not the studio who pay them. They take a cut of the overall wage. They don't get their fee on top like in football.

Sancho wanted the move and the wages weren't an issue. So what was this agent actually doing to warrant even 15 or 20m? I don't get it.

If you want the top of the range players...you need to pay the agents. Ask us...we know all about it.

In fact Sancho's agent has been spotted numerous times in our corporate boxes.

the alternative is trying to develop what you have or bring in players to develop

sadly utd seem incapable of doing this either.

Not entirely sure how recruitment agencies work in my line of work, but I certainly don't give them a cut of my agreed salary.

Fairly certain they get paid a commission by the employers company for finding me.

There's still a lot of development for Sancho as well. Nobody is buying the finished article. What you paying for is the ridiculously high ceiling that he has. Whether he reaches it or not is where the risk sets it...but for me he's up there with Mbappe, Trent, Alphonso Davies, Haaland etc as the best young players in the world in their positions, already performing at a high level. These are legends in the making.

I think we have a very long and enviable history of doing exactly that.

I agree OP.

It actually even makes the Glazers and Ed look quite shrewd, when you break deals down like this. Which previously I thought was impossible.

What on earth were Dortmund and Sancho's agent thinking?

Good luck with that. I'm sure there are some Chinese or American clubs who might be interested in that.

Ridiculous even Messi isn’t worth that, and Sancho isn’t even that good I’d rather have your current front 3 or just have Cavani starting over martial

Transfer or salary cap is way overdue

posted on 7/10/20

What about Sancho’s signing fee? A chunk of the rest might have been for him.

His agent won’t be too upset either way.

Sancho signed a new contract earlier this year, and there’ll have been a nice fee for him when that happened.

He also signed a new contract on revised terms in August 2019. After one in October 2018. On top of the one he signed when he joined in August 2017.

So that’s four bonus bumper paydays in the last four years.

There’ll be a new contract for Sancho before next summer extending and improving his contract.

I think his agent will be happy enough.

"Transfer or salary cap is way overdue"

It's actually a cap on agents fees that's required. They run the game at the moment.
