I would put him up there as one of the greatest sports commentators of all time.

There was a piece on him at the weekend which said something like “he perfectly captured the tension and excitement like no other could”
Then it showed a little ball roll along the grass and fall down a hole with him saying “what a lovely shot that is” in a rather low monotone voice
Some of the words that came out of his mouth were so articulate and spot on the moment as well. Golf is a great sport, not for all, but he made it as exciting as it could be with his words.
A very calming, friendly voice.

He hadn't retired Phenom. Was due to retire after next year's Open.
Thought he suddenly sounded a lot older at the Masters recently.
As others have said, one of the greats.
