If Luiz had wiped the wolves player out then it would have only been a yell

This is how ridiculous football has become

No... The ref cost us the game.

It's exactly this kind of attitude which allows the refs to get away with it.

Luiz did not run into his opponent. His opponents stud slightly brushed Luiz knee as Luiz tried to avoid any contact.

Protesting a red would do absolutely nothing. You think he starts screaming and shouting Pawson would just go "ah, fair enough, not a red"?? The ref had the card out almost instantly.

Luiz didn't make a challenge, that is not a red card.

Fault 1 is true though.

Clattenburg: "This type of incident is accepted as a penalty and yellow card. Referee Craig Pawson and VAR Jon Moss got it wrong.

The law was meant to see players sent off after conceding a penalty only if they had deliberately fouled an opponent to deny a clear scoring opportunity. Arsenal and Luiz should feel aggrieved. "

Seriously, I thought it was a harsh decision to take tbh. Refs in this country are either not up to the standards this league deserves, or they’re following orders from up above. Their mistakes are more frequent now, that it’s becoming fairly obvious to fans.

My opinion is that the VAR shouldn't be one of the on-field refs. Instead we should have specialists, who have no loyalty to the on-field ref. Too much hiding behind "clear and obvious", too much sticking by the on-field decision. Half these refs have trouble using the technology.

The Ref and Leno cost us the game.
We might as well play Rush Goalie v Villa

Luiz did not cost us the game.

The ref and stupidity by Leno did

The ex refs and pundits are interpreting the rules differently. A genuine attempt to play the ball would be a yellow so because Luiz didn't play the ball VAR decided he deliberately denied a goalscoring opportunity, but it was neither and just an accident.

Let my annoyance get the best of me when diatribing all over the place yesterday; certainly let my dislike for Luiz cloud any reasonable judgement I may have otherwise made. Had a look again at the incident and there's no facking way that's a penalty. Terrible positioning from Luiz to allow himself to get caught out like that, but atrocious decision making from officials who, time and time again now, are proving they're not even close to being fit for purpose.

Totally agree

Have the rules changed again since this?

If not VAR must have thought it was deliberate, didn't look it to me (but then I'm not Jon Moss!).

The way our strikers are performing, there is no guarantee we would have scored if he'd let him through!

I think Luiz has to take some blame for getting himself into that position. He got there by making bad decisions, but decisions that you only have one chance to make in the heat of the moment.

The ref got the red card wrong and even with the ability to review it with VAR they still got it wrong

It's a harsh-looking one but I think it was the right decision. Wolves player was through on goal and about to shoot, Luiz gets in the way of the player's natural stride and he falls over. Had Luiz not been in that position, the player would have had a clear goal-scoring opportunity. Luiz' presence impeded the Wolves player and caused him to trip. The Wolves player would not have tripped had Luiz not been in that position.

I do think it begs the question though, how far back should a defender be positioned if there's the risk that they'll catch the player's trailing leg? Does it depend on the runner's stride? If some genetic freak with 5 ft legs is in full-stride, do you have to give him 6 ft clearance for fear of catching his trailing leg on the upswing?

Some clarity would be good.

How did Luiz cost us the game?

He did allow the player to get the ball. He made no attempt to win the ball or even tackle the player.

Its was imo just a pen and even then the contact was extremely minimal. I really don't think the wolves players studs grazing Luiz knee would bring you down like that.

He wasn't to blame for the so called foul ,as I dont think it was a foul, if anything the Wolves guy caught his knee , but WTF was he doing so high up the field when we were winning the match and in control with only a few seconds to go before half time , for a player of his experience that is just plain stupid
