I try to combine overpayments with saving and investing.

Indeed, and even when investing, particularly for the well off, I’d strongly advise diversification between ISA, pension and property. It can provide maximum flexibility of options at retirement. I’d also encourage further diversification within any investments and, as Firkin says, don’t invest in things you don’t understand. Nobody values your assets as much as you do so take the time to read and read and read. By all means use a IFA but they guarantee nothing and will get their commission regardless. Even reputable firms will have no qualms of taking advantage of the unwary.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Yes, keep reading, and think carefully about if/when you need an IFA in this day and age when there are so many options for DIY investing. If you do go down the IFA route, make sure it's an IFA and not an FA.

I can well believe that. I'm not one of those people who rubbish crypto and I reckon I am probably missing out on some big gains by not trying it out. However, there's potential for big losses as well as big gains and I'm not in a position to be able to risk big losses at present. I'm also not sure enough about how crypto works. If people have more knowledge, some genuinely disposable cash and a large appetite for risk, then go for it and make lots of money (or lose it and not care).

----------------------------------------------------------------------
Eh...was it not you that started it.
On the topic of currency I had to find a way to get money to the lad in the US. UK banks are horrendously expensive. A lot of the low cost operators like Revolut that seemed too good to be true used Wirecard and were caught in the missing Eur2bn scandal.
Went with Transferwise (now just Wise) and it has been a revelation. There's about 60 currencies. You can store as many at a time as you want. No manipulation of the exchange rates or different buy / sell rates like airport and high street - you get the exact market exchange rate then they add an admin usually 0.35%. Sending that currency is minimal too - $1.05 on $1000. You get a debit card that you can use for online purchases or use at ATMs - it will automatically use the home currency of the atm and if you run out of that in your account it will automatically use another currency and convert at the preferred rate as per. Even better you get a virtual bank account branch, number, IBAN, address etc in a number of countries so you can use that to appear as a resident of that country. Should you need to for any reason you understand1
Save me about 8x compared with the high street and gives flexibility to do stuff online. Can use to cheaply speculate on currency if that is your thing. No interest paid right enough but what accounts do these days anyway? Regulated by the FCA and by bodies in most of the main regions so you have protection.
You get £75 for every 3 users you invite too. Only cost to them is £5 for the debit card. Even if just for holiday money it is well worth it and you'll have saved the £5 on one trip versus Travelex or whatever. All done online, card limits, freeze / unfreeze, report stolen etc. I had to report an unfulfilled online US order and they refunded in couple of days.
Highly recommended and cheaper than credit cards.

You know how mental the Crypto market is, but the good thing with Hedera is the companies on the Hedera governing council.
The full list of Hedera Governing Council members includes Boeing, Deutsche Telekom, DLA Piper, FIS (WorldPay), Google, IBM, Magalu, Nomura, Swirlds, Swisscom Blockchain, Tata Communications, University College London (UCL), Wipro and now LG.
Adidas started using Hedera just this month for it's financials and other companies and platforms are joining all the time.
It will dip a lot on it's journey up and I intend to increase my holding each time.

Why the change to dollars first out of interest?

You can't buy it directly with GBP

I try to combine overpayments with saving and investing.

Indeed, and even when investing, particularly for the well off, I’d strongly advise diversification between ISA, pension and property. It can provide maximum flexibility of options at retirement. I’d also encourage further diversification within any investments and, as Firkin says, don’t invest in things you don’t understand. Nobody values your assets as much as you do so take the time to read and read and read. By all means use a IFA but they guarantee nothing and will get their commission regardless. Even reputable firms will have no qualms of taking advantage of the unwary.

Yes, keep reading, and think carefully about if/when you need an IFA in this day and age when there are so many options for DIY investing. If you do go down the IFA route, make sure it's an IFA and not an FA.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
There’s nothing wrong with being a restricted FA.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
I note you didn't refute the other stuff though?
