We should do what Austria are doing
Put a lockdown on all those that have not been vaccinated

Antivax = #vankers
----------------------------------------------------------------------
It'll be interesting to see how it goes

The people that perpetuate this antivaxx garbage need to start getting prosecuted in the courts. They are harming people.

Difficult to do that though, and I strongly believe that if you don't want the vaccine for whatever reason then that's fine.

I'd withhold Covid treatment from people that wilfully don't get the jab though, it's obviously not an issue for them as most of them think the virus is a hoax anyway, so if they get sick, fck them.

The Austrian approach of locking down the unvaccinated makes sense inasmuch as they're the prime incubators and spreaders now (including variants), but something about it just makes me uncomfortable, like it's the thin end of an authoritarian wedge,

Dunno, it's a difficult one.

It's easier to proces if you look through a lens of that not everything associated with dictatorships / authoritarian gov's is all bad or that everything democracy / freedom is inherently good.

We usually stereotype people of certain cultures (Japanese, other asians, Scandinavian folks, etc) as 'sheep', but in this COVID situation it's actually better for the general good to just shut up and do as you're told. And yes you're screwed if your gov is not competent like Singapore, Korea or dare I say even China.

On the other hand we are seen by them as the arrogant fools who even need to hold a discussion about the right place to take a sh@t. (very ironic how that's actually become a real thing with the whole gender neutral toilets discussion...)
And we're screwed when support for issues like vaxxing become split. Doesn't matter if it's due to fake news or genuine concerns like vaxxing for pregnant women, children, people with certain disabilities, etc.

Freedom is overrated. In a society where the individual is key it is easy for everything that makes that individual to go above and beyond their normal expectations to be perceived as an attack on their freedoms but in countries where the collective is seen as the most important thing there are always going to be more people happy to make vital sacrifices to protect their community. It goes both ways however and in those collective societies the good things that comes from individualism are found wanting but it really is something that both sides should be looking to learn from each other.

This probably won’t happen but you’d hope post-Covid that people in the West might start to see the benefits of a collective society and work towards it because the benefits are massive.

Lerrandinho, good post. I especially agree with the first paragraph, it really annoys me that you have diiiiickheads that start talking about fascism because some of their extremely privileged rights are being infringed.

I agree (with the caveat that the people who are doing the telling are competent, but that's a whole different discussion).

Like I said, my only concern is setting a precedent that can be followed for less life-threatening stuff in the future. Locking anti-vaxxers down sits OK with me as it's not a freedom I'll lose, the next one might be.

Yup, that's was more and more becoming my main pet peeve even before COVID happened (since 2016, the Trump/Brexit era...)

And regarding setting precedents: I've become pretty cynic about politicians (even the good ones). Nowadays they don't need any precedents to jump to the lower end of the scale if they wanted to as accountability is dead. That's the 21st century big weakness of democracy for me

It's for the good of society to ban alcohol, fast food etc. Where does it stop?

I’m not sure it sets a precedent for any future hypotheticals, to be honest. One of the good things about Naaazi Germany is that it’s scared the shiiiiiiit out of so many people to the dangers of such things happening again. However, with that it’s led to the merest utterances of strict measures being deemed as fascist, or a slippery slope on their way to it, when the really they aren’t all that strict considering the nature of what is happening.

It’s like when people talk about socialism being a positive and then the same idiots start shouting ‘we don’t want communism’. Some people are hardwired to jump to the very worst possible conclusion which is stupid enough but it’s even worse when the current things they’re happy enough to live with are hardly worth defending blindly.

Is there a need to stop? It would be like a doctor telling you: yeah we cured your COVID, but nah we don't care about your crooked teeth or pimples on your face.

Alcohol and fast-food are a surprisingly good comparison though, because just like those we also cannot outright 'ban' COVID. We take measures to limit the impact (no drinking u18 or while driving . as like getting vaxxed, distancing, no big gatherings, etc).
We don't have any measures regarding fast-food and we're probably too late for this generation but still should.
It's when all other measures fail the gov should think about outright banning alcohol or foodstuff and at that point I don't blame them

There is always one who has to bring the topic of religion into something completely unrelated.

We shouldn’t worry to much about the antivaxers.

Darwin has shown us that with natural selection they will be extinct within a generation

Or, due to unforeseen complications we did not realise, back in 2021, that the vaccine had catastrophic long-term effects.

But seriously, there is a large constituency amongst the anti-vaxxers who refuse the jab because of such concerns. These anxieties can be put to rest by the science, easily. However, there seems little governmental effort going into allaying these fears.

This pandemic is made worse by the government’s handling of it.

Honestly, gen z and millennials under the age of 30 are f*cking idiots for the most part.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

Here here

Sadly each generation will get even worse
----------------------------------------------------------------------

Every generation are idiots for the most part. Look at how the older generations get red in the face a vote Brexit in their masses. Or repeatedly ignored climate change.

Complaining about younger generations ruining the world is what every older generation as done for generations. It basically just makes you sound like a miserable old fart.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
I don't agree, generation Z are by far the worst. My Auntie is a teacher, she's been a teacher since the 70's and she claims generation Z are by far the worst generation she's ever taught. They have zero respect for authority, they're weak-willed, and they think they know it all. She claims each generation has got gradually worse. I was born in the early 80s, knife crime was unheard of when I was a kid, now it's a daily occurrence.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

Or she's just got older, more bitter and more out of touch with the world as it moves on. Like every generation before her.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Or she's telling it like it is. She's very liberal and young thinking, her offspring are younger than me due to having her children very late in life. She's not someone who's out of touch. She actually does home visits now, for pupils who are pregnant or expelled. You obviously know more than her you being a man of the people whilst she's just a mere teacher with decades of working with children under her belt.

Given my grandfather, mother and sister in law are all teachers and roll their eyes at this generational stuff, I'd suggest she is very out of touch.

Lucky for me, I don't live in London, but I do vaguely remember the teacher being stabbed to death. A stabbing was big news then, it ain't know.
