the data from SA released this morning is the most positive yet since the Omicron variant was uncovered.

hopefully it holds up
----------------------------------------------------------------------

Double Pfizer jabs seem to be holding up against the Omicron variant.

Had 3 now so I can do what I want 😎

I see 2 of the most common symptoms are a scratchy throat and pain in the lower back

everyone I know including myself seem to have had a bit of a sore throat over the last few weeks but testing negative on LFT & PCR tests

with regards to restrictions it's usually a bit like England, if it's bad they usually throw it out the night before to gauge the response of the public before announcing

the fact not much has been said makes me think it'll be another plea for boosters, maybe restrict the amount of people allowed in your house and worst comes to the worst restrictions to amount of people at tables in bars etc but not sure how they can impose that without bringing back table order only rules

worth nothing today is the last day you can test positive and be allowed out for Xmas, with the way this seems to be spreading I wonder how many people are going to potentially bend rules between now and Xmas

Really? I see a mix. The below excerpt might explain the mad rush to get us boosted...?

The Moderna and AstraZeneca vaccines showed significantly lower neutralizing ability against the omicron variant compared to that against other tested variants. However, the Pfizer vaccine and heterologous AstraZeneca/Pfizer vaccines showed comparatively higher neutralization against the omicron variant compared to other tested vaccination regimens.

In contrast, antibodies induced by natural SARS-CoV-2 infection largely failed to neutralize the omicron variant. However, the antibodies showed potent neutralizing ability against the alpha, beta, and delta variants.

Importantly, super immune antibodies showed considerable neutralizing efficacy against the omicron variant. However, the efficacy was comparatively higher against the delta variant.

Separately, J&J have released in the last hour https://www.reuters.com/world/africa/no-omicron-deaths-jj-vaccine-study-south-africa-scientist-says-2021-12-14/

Can you? I thought it was isolation if you tested positive regardless.

Isn’t it if you are just a contact of someone who tested positive you can still go out if you test negative; but that goes tomorrow and you have to isolate for 10 days regardless of whether you test negative, been fully vaccinated or not?

A total of 418 million doses of COVID-19 vaccines have now arrived in Africa, but fewer than 236 million doses have been administered, with almost half waiting to be used. The situation varies by country. South Africa has administered 82% of the doses it has received, Egypt has administered 52% of supplied doses, Nigeria has administered 48%, Cameroon 23%, and the Democratic Republic of Congo has administered fewer than 5% of the vaccine doses that they have received.

yeah so if you test positive today your last day of isolation would be Xmas eve

I only thought you had to isolate as a close contact if you were in the same household, could be wrong mind you?

Ghod, where are you seeing lower back pain as being a symptom? Interested to know.

And in among that number I’d guess most will maybe only have had one dose

Effectiveness against hospitalisation has fallen from 93% to 70% – but that's still a very high figure.
Study also provides hard data suggesting omicron is milder: the risk of hospitalisation among adults diagnosed with Covid-19 was 29% lower in the latest wave

that's a live major real world study coming from SA

however it does seem to be worse for children under 18 the new variant

Pedantic (moi? ) but it is 10 days from first symptoms, not 10 days form positive test, is it not?

I've had my 2 vaccines but tbh I'm hesitant to pump a 3rd one in the space of 6 months into my system being what I would consider a healthy person, just doesn't sit right tbh and I'm anxious about having to get another one.

Here's what South Africa has found out about omicron:

-Risk of reinfection is high
-Two Pfizer shots stop 70% of omicron hospitalizations
-It's causing less respiratory distress than delta. Symptoms include scratchy throat, congestion and lower back pain.

I wasn't too bothered about my booster until my best mate (double jagged) and prior infection (June) caught it again and felt poorly for a few days, said he still isn't 100% a few weeks on

I think it is clear the scientists have known the data about vaccination being ineffective for some time and relayed that to government who have tried not to panic the population but inexplicably push the booster programme that clearly cannot be trusted with the hard truth.

Not just you feeling this way mate.

Are we to just continue getting boosters every six months forever?

Because it takes time to convert the data into a publication and, in hindsight, explains the seemingly irrational panic for boosters.

what we need to do is get the rest of the world vaccinated, stop the potential of an even worse variant

That's right.

Same household you isolate whether test is positive or not.

A contact not in the same household you are released from isolation with a negative test

I'm going to have to get it if they enforce the passport thing and you needing to have the 3 jabs for it to be valid, but right now I'm going to hold off to see how that plays out.

For the second day running, lateral flow tests are unavailable to be ordered via the UK Government website.

A message on the site on Tuesday morning said there were no tests available for home delivery, although tests can still be collected from pharmacies.

On Monday, the UK Health Security Agency said that “due to exceptionally high demand, ordering lateral flow tests on gov.uk has been temporarily suspended to fulfil existing orders”.
