One of the many issues with Arteta is that when there's any form of adversity (a couple of players injured for instance) the side absolutely crumbles are can't even do the basics.
Without injuries we may well be able to see out the season and potentially be in with a chance at fourth
However as soon as a first teamer is injured we'll go to absolute shiiiite because there's limited quality to fill in. ESR being an excellent player though.
We could've definitely done with a new first team CM/DM and CF. However we spent the most in the world in summer so it's not that surprising we didn't go wild again.
It's now all on Arteta to get the best out of what we have and if he doesn't perhaps he'll be sent packing with funds trusted to a new manager.
Forget about potential injuries for a moment.
We were already vulnerable to CoVid-induced absences before the January window opened.
And what have we done about it over the past few weeks? We've only gone and cut the size of the squad down, of course.
Having a pool of 20 senior players is bad enough under normal circumstances. Having a pool of 20 senior players during CoVid is nothing short of facking reckless.
yeah all-in-all it's not actually that bad... it would have been worse had we panicked and bought a lesser quality striker on high wages that we were lumbered with for 3+ years. There's still some hope for the rest of the season and plenty of funds to improve things further for next year. No shiny new striker though

That's a fair point actually. Maybe the club have a genius plan to make the squad so small that one covid infection really does mean the game must be postponed
But seriously that does make things a lot worse in reality
a club needs 4 positive tests now... even 2 or 3 and we'd be screwed
Whoa...you guys cannot be serious can you? If one of our central defenders is injured, we have only HOLDING. If Xhaka or Partey get injured or suspended (very likely), we are down to what we saw in January and that did not work! If Laca gets hurt or suspended, we will have Nketiah as a sole striker. Both of them can't score on a good day. Martinelli is not a central striker for me. Pepe cannot play there either. And we also have covid...yes some could have mild issues but what if one has long covid? Or heart inflammation that keeps people out for a few weeks? If we lose ANY player in our first 11, we don't look the same. ESR for Odegaard is the only able replacement or we change how we play.
Horrible transfer window and you cannot dress it up any differently.
As for those thinking we can get players in the summer...name the last BIG signing we had once we dropped out of the Champions league. Vlahovic did not want to come despite us chucking money at him. If we don't get the CL, we won't bring in the players we actually need. This season was a fantastic opportunity... playing once a week and Spurs, Leicester, Man Utd all not playing well.

Sadly that does sum things up quite well
That said Arteta wouldn't have been able to win games with the guys we've let go filling in. He's only managed to get acceptable results when almost everyone is available
Ramsdale
Tomi White Gabriel Tierney
Partey Xhaka
Saka Ode ESR
Martinelli
That team can push for top 4, but there's no chance in hell they're staying fit or avoiding red cards.
We needed a midfielder and striker and got nothing. I'm honestly not that fussed about the outgoing players, auba was obviously not playing for us again.
I hope we don't regret not signing anyone, because in the worst case scenario, we miss out on top 4, Newcastle stay up, and they then inflate the market, blowing us out of the water for players that we might have signed.
The outgoings aren't the problem. The problem is the lack of incomings. We desperately need a new striker and we didn't get one. We also needed an upgrade on Xhaka (Bruno G? Bissouma?) and didn't get one. We've left ourselves woefully thin for the run-in. We just have to pray that we stay injury and Covid-free.

I think this will happen anyway. Arteta spunked 100s of millions up the wall ln the last few windows. Kroenke will want someone else in for the summer window to hopefully bring in some players to glue together the broken mess Arteta has created. Probably knows you've already lost top 4, maybe even top 6 and doesn't trust Arteta can fix what's broken.
Don't you remember how tough it was for us to get rid of deadwood like Mustafi and others. Getting rid of those players is a big thing. Of course it's not good we haven't bought anyone, but I'd rather we don't buy anyone than buy someone just to buy someone and then give them big wages and get stuck with them again.

Sorry what? So the 145m we spent on White, Lokonga, Tommie, Ramsdale and Odegard was badly spent was it? Would you rather we had bought 100m Grealish and maybe Sancho for 70m?

Yes and no. It's hard to get rid of deadwood who are stuck on large wages for any decent transfer fee. Name ONE player who would be deemed deadwood that we sold for a decent fee!
Mustafi - left for nothing
Willian - left for nothing
Ozil - left for nothing (we may even have continued to pay him for months after he left)
Kolasinac - left for nothing
Auba - left for nothing AND took a pay cut to get the heck out
Chambers - left for nothing
The others we COULD have sold (AMN and Nketiah) we refuse to sell (for God knows what reason)
So yeah..I think it is actually pretty easy to get rid of deadwood when you dont demand a fee and they have the possibility of getting a decent sign on fee or wages dues to the other clubs not needing to pay a fee. And all the deadwood were close to the end of their contracts anyway (minus Auba) and had milked us for the majority of their wages due.

It is very easy to get rid of deadwood with 6 months left for free because you can go to them and say "hey... you make 100k a week and there are 5 months left on your contract. So 2 million. Give that up, but you can sign for Team A for 70k a week for 3 years and they will give you a 1 million bonus." As a player, I'd take that deal as I will not lose out on much in the long run and I am getting back on the pitch and getting my free transfer 5 months early. Especially as none of our deadwood are exactly in great form and are probably past their prime. It's a win win win for all 3 parties but I would say it is the easiest of paths to take hence why I give very little credit for it.
The Auba deal would have been good if he really was deadwood. I am not sure he was...the system we play does not suit him and he has been off form. But he is only 32 and had the golden boot not long ago. His shocking form has coincided with Arteta being here. I bet he bangs in the goals for Barcelona and we are left wondering why on earth do we keep a manager who falls out with players left right and centre
