Where’s the hypocrisy?
The UK and Qatari governments are strategic partners. They have strong and wide ranging defence and security (which include the UK forces training Qatari forces), trade, education, science and other agreements.
The UK government under Cameron pledged support for the Qatari WC, UK contractors have made a fortune from helping with construction and infrastructure preparation, and UK police will be in Doha to help the Qataris during the event.
The UK govt has done nothing but support the Qatari WC.
1) The UK Government has never opposed nor, to my knowledge, criticised the Qatari World Cup. It has long cherished trade with and investment from autocratic Gulf states and seen this as more important than human rights. Saudi Arabia has murdered Yemeni civilians using weapons supplied by UK manufacturers. We have a long history of turning a blind eye to such things because we benefit economically from these relationships. Of all the things you could accuse the government of, inconsistency in relation to the Gulf states isn't really one.
2) Those who have criticised the Qatar WC have done so on the following basis:
- Lack of transparency in the bidding: FIFA published objective criteria for assessing the merit of bids, and Qatar scored very low. There are many indications that the process was corrupted.
- The conditions under which labourers built the stadiums. Underpaid, working under severe conditions with restricted human rights let alone employment rights and protections. While the widely quoted numbers in thousands appear to be mistaken, it's clear that many men, mostly desperately poor workers from South Asia, died from exhaustion, heat and accidents. A fabulously wealthy country like Qatar could have added spent a bit more to give workers more rest, better protection. But it seems that paying a higher price in lives seemed more acceptable in a society where it's considered normal for migrant workers to be exploited and abused with minimal legal recourse. Incidentally, some of the recent discussions have been framed around liberal Western vs traditional Islamic values. My understanding of Islam is that such treatment of the poor and vulnerable is extremely inconsistent with the Prophet's teaching.
- The discrimination against gay people. Obviously the OP is fine with that. But let's imagine a scenario where Israel wins the right to host a future WC. Let's imagine Israel continues it's current drift toward illiberal nationalism. What if by the time of that WC practising Muslims are either not permitted to enter Israel or understand that they may be at risk of arrest or persecution if they are caught praying in the privacy of their hotel room, or if they flaunt their religion in public places? Would this be acceptable? Would this be a case where it would be appropriate to respect the local laws and customs of the host country? Or would it be, as I would contend, inappropriate to award a WC to a country that excludes members of the footballing community because of their identity?

I really don't see how you can compare someone's faith to homosexuality. You are born muslim, it's not something you have a choice in. Unlike being gay which is essentially just being brainwashed by western society. It is no coincidence that there were less gay people 100 years ago, because it was far less promoted in the media so people weren't brainwashed into being gay.
In summary, it's fine to hold the world cup in Qatar because why should you pander to some people who have been brainwashed by their society (gays)?
And NO it should absolutely NOT be held in a country that would discriminate against people for their religion, because they were born that way so they can't help the way they are.

I’ve noticed a lot of people on here who make homophobic posts are outraged whenever religion or race is criticised or mocked. They don’t mind discrimination just as long as it isn’t colour based.
I’m not like that, I’m evenhanded with regards to discrimination, I have no truck with anyone who aren’t white, straight, English, Christian, and beautiful like me.
I see booze has now been banned in Qatar stadiums. What a fecking crapfeast this World Cup is going to be.

No wonder you were banned for that. Putting your tongue in between another guy's cheeks?? That is truly abhorrent. Between a girl's cheeks, ok fine, but not another guy!!

I thought you were the worlds first gay football fan?

I’ve noticed a lot of people on here who make homophobic posts are outraged whenever religion or race is criticised or mocked. They don’t mind discrimination just as long as it isn’t colour based.
I’m not like that, I’m evenhanded with regards to discrimination, I have no truck with anyone who aren’t white, straight, English, Christian, and beautiful like me.
I see booze has now been banned in Qatar stadiums. What a fecking crapfeast this World Cup is going to be.

No alcohol will be served at stadiums during the World Cup.
Budweiser must be fuming.

It’s ok, they’ll serve 400 different types of mineral water. That should please the fans.

England cricket team have been playing in Dubai for years but zero scrutiny. What about the LGBT who are banned in Dubai and lack of alcohol?

I on the other hand do have a problem with everyone other than myself. I do not discriminate, in who I discriminate against.
