Pele the Greatest ...wishing him all the best (still)....Sadly he stopped responding to chemotherapy treatment for Colon Cancer

Palliative Care - gives me the creeps - worst memories of my life

Father diagnosed with 4th stage Lung-C years ago - only had 5 weeks left

Extremely difficult to see loved ones go away in front of your eyes

Without doubt the greatest ever player. Three World Cup winning medals. As a 17 year old scored two goals in a world cup semi-final, and another two goals in a final. 1,000 goals in all competitions.

There will never ever be a player like him again. Fair play to Messi and Ronaldo in the modern era. But neither are in the same class as Pele at his peak.

Pele was a one-off. The figure-head of the samba style of Brazilian football who were the kings of International football during the halcyon days of the game when the euphoria of winning was much greater than the pain and consequences of losing, which peaked in Mexico 1970. Good luck Pele and hold on in there.

PS. Maradona was much better than Messi or Ronaldo.

Yeah he was the greatest. To do what he did on those pitches with players tackling like they used to is unbelievable. To win 3 world cups (I think?) is incredible and neither Messi or Ronaldo belong in the same league. Annoys me how generation Xbox have declared them both as the GOAT. Next it will be Mbappe FFS

Sad news, Pele is a true football legend and pioneer, a fantastic ambassador for the global game and one of the best players ever. And a film star to boot, 82 is a decent knock, he was born the same year as Sir Jimmy Greaves.

I've always seen Pele as the best there ever was, it had me thinking it was down to my age!..

He brought the best out of Banks as well!..

Thinking about it had something to do with my age, me being old school and seeing players get up and shake hands after being shot suggests he was the best player ever!..

Yep they are grainy clips but still very impressive none the less. Seems like he was more than just a goal scorer and ahead of his time.

But the debate about who is the greatest will always rumble on. In my lifetime it was first Maradona, Gazza (I don't care), Ronaldo (Brazil), Zidane, Ronaldinho and now Messi.

If I had to choose one, I'm going with Messi because I believe Maradona was on coke when he played, which was proved right eventually. At Napoli he must have been on it.

But back to Pele, the clips are ridiculous and the fact his name still lives on to this day tells you something.

Ace have a look at the video I posted there’s plenty of footage of his goals and technical ability - most people just don’t get round to watching it and see the same old recycled stuff. He was doing stuff people hasn’t seen before on pitches that were worse than your average front garden. Then have a look at the greats that speak about him who played against him - they’d never seen anyone like him.

He’s rightly considered the greatest or at least one of them.

Maradona was a coke head for sure, for years probably. Whether he was on it while actually playing who knows, but coke is a recreational drug not a performance enhancing drug - it doesn’t improve physical performance, it affects the brain, makes you high, creates euphoria etc. Taking coke regularly would probably have had a detrimental effect on him if anything - leaves you tired, paranoid, not good for the heart and so on. If he was partying and doing loads of coke while living in Napoli - which he was - then it’s even more ridiculous that he was able to perform at the level he did IMO.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
If he had a line before he was playing and it was good stuff, he would have enhanced his performance.

Really? I mean how much has anyone on here really seen of ‘peak Pele’ to be able to make that claim with any conviction - other than the usual recycled clips of the 1970 WC and some grainy footage from the Brazilian leagues where he spent virtually his whole career. Not knocking him, but this thing of claiming he was better than Maradona and that Messi isn’t in the same class etc is based as much on mythology and rose tinted specs as much as anything else.

Also, although Brazil won the WC in 58, 62 and 70, Pele only played one game at the 1962 WC - he was then injured and missed the rest of the tournament. Brazil were still good enough to win it without him anyway.

It’s a bit like boxing, where the older dudes like Armstrong and Robinson get mythologized so much you’re not allowed to suggest a modern great such as Mayweather might actually be better.

So what actually makes Pele a better footballer than Messi, for example?
----------------------------------------------------------------------

He just was Ace. 1958 was the first world cup I saw him, and 1970 was the last I saw him play. Yes he wasn't on the TV as much as the modern players, but when he was, he was pure class.

I get you, like a lot of modern fans think football only started in the 21st century. But given some of the dross at this world cup, then forgive us that did actually see him play for bigging up. Not that he needs us to do that, his record does that.

Also he played most of his football in South America, which at the time was considered a far superior continent football wise to its European counterpart.

Nobody is denying he is one of the greats. Everything has to be so black and white to some people. You can pose a question, apply critical thinking etc without it meaning you’re slagging someone off.

Someone in this thread said he was better than Maradona and easily superior to Messi and Ronaldo. I’m interested to know how much people have really seen of him to be able to make a judgement like that with such strong conviction.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

You don't have to necessarily need to see a player to make a judgement. Plenty that have will testify to how great he was.

I never actually saw Michaelangelo painting or Shakespeare writing or Beethoven writing music. But they are all considered the best of the best in their particular professions.
