One won everything as captain, the other cost Utd 2 CL's

Actually, both were underrated and both deserve a lot of respect. Carrick was the superior footballer, and I think we'd have seen even more from him if he'd spent his prime years playing for a manager who favoured possession-dominant football.

England would have won the World Cup if we'd built our side around a midfield of Carrick, Scholes and Lampard.

According to the PL website:

Jordan Henderson: 424 games, 33 goals, 54 assists
Michael Carrick: 481 games, 24 goals, 40 assists

The stats don't lie.

I always felt Carrick was underrated when he was playing even in his prime but then massively overrated after he retired and mostly due to the dross that came in to try and replace him.

I have hardly watched LFC play over the last 10yrs so can't really comment on Henderson.

Henderson also has more goals and assists than Franco Baresi. World class.

Completely different players.
Agree with the above that carrick has been overrated since retirement due to being underrated during his career.

A solid player.

Henderson also underrated in what he brought the team. He essentially run the whole side of a pitch for liverpool for a couple of years allowing salah and trent to push on and smother teams from the right wing.

Different players.

Henderson is more a driving force in midfield who fills spaces well, lots of energy , lots of commitment rubs off on the rest of the team.

Carrick far more cultured on the ball, read the game very well and linked the back line forward very well.

Both great players for their team hard to pick between them. Depends on how you shape your team I suppose.

One thing I would give to Henderson is that he had enough grit/engine/focus to be able to fight and draw/win the midfield battles against a top of their game possession/pressure based style like City back then.

While Carrick even in his prime would had no chance against their Barca or current Liverpool Era City no matter who you had paired him up with. But no doubt overall he's a better footballer than Henderson, who was horrid in his early years...

Carrick more talented.

Henderson more effective.

Henderson vs Fletcher and Alonso vs Carrick would be the more appropriate comparisons due to their playing styles/position.

Henderson has probably been to Liverpool/Klopp what Fletcher was to us (before his illness); a hardworking, battle-hardened player that performs a role for the team that the manager loves and wants, and can also play a bit more than maybe opposition fans appreciate. Fletcher was a go-to player for Fergie, especially in the big games, and I'm sure it's the same for Klopp/Henderson.

Oooft Alonso / Carrick.

thats a tough one to take. Iv always spoke highly of Carrick, think he was excellent in his role. Really liked watching him play and he was defo underrated in terms of importance to the balance of the team.

But Alonso was a different gravy, he was outstanding. Genuine world class, defo one of the best at his role in that generation.

Harsh on Carrick to be compared to someone I rated even higher.

I wouldnt grumble over having either in my team at all. Alonso would be my pick if I had the choice though.

CARRICK IS UNDERRATED NO ONE EVER RATED HIM THEN OR NOW THIS IS A FRESH IDEA THAT I HAVE JUST THOUGHT OF NOW THAT HE WAS UNDERRATED NOT JUST BECAUSE I HEAR EVERYONE SAY IT ALL OF THE TIME EVERYONE AGREES THAT HE SHOULD BE HIGHLY RATED THAT MAKES HIM REALLY UNDERRATED. RATED HIGHLY. UNDERRATED. NO ONE RATES HIM. HIGHLY RATED. UNDERRATED.

Carrick was better as Henderson had a funny way of running.

Both competent midfielders but neither of them "special". Nowhere near the likes of Gascoigne, Robson, Platt, Keane, Scholes, Souness, Wilkins and many more players that others could name.

As far as stats go I'm with Abe Lincoln:

I think Henderson the superior player. Carrick much better at keeping it simple, keeping possession etc. Henderson better at everything else, tackling, forward passing, running(he loves running) and leadership etc.

Some say both underrated. I don't think they were. Very good players who were never great players and rated accordingly. Although both had a minority of doubters who thought they were poor players of course.

I think we need to factor in that Carrick, much like Scholes, is still getting better, even after retiring.
