"Is there genuine hatred from many? I thought he'd genuinely just become the biggest joke in football, although I say that as a non Utd fan."

No, I think you're right. There was a point where he was getting death threats from Twitter (who hasn't) but like you say he's just a joke more than anything. I do think the media are overblowing things a bit, he was targeted and booed last night because he's useless and it worked, same would happen to any plank who has managed to sign for a huge club, made captain and is sh-t.

Wasn't at the game but all I heard on TV were cheers and not boos though TBF the majority Scottish crowd may have drowned out the English supporters?

We only had Varane injured by the time the transfer window closed. We clearly wanted to sell (and replace with Pavard) but couldn’t because he wanted a payoff. He stayed because he wouldn’t leave for a lower wage, not because of injuries. He’s our 5th choice CB when everyone is fit.

Sliver

You’re right, I think they were more ironic cheers from the Scottish fans rather than boos.

He's such a sh!te player. Been saying it for years. His arrogance does not help him either. If he wasn't arrogant he wouldn't get the abuse he does.

Have to agree with 1982. Its 100% over the top but have no sympathy for him. He had the chance to take himself out the huge spotlight that comes with playing with a club like man utd and go to another decent club where lets face it, if he had nobody would give a fack about harry maguire anymore.

He chose not to.

He's lost even the basics of the game. In one or two games, preceding the goal, he could be seen marking or tackling his own team mate 🤣. He is a parody you just cannot make up! Sadly, if there was a walking, talking metaphor for what Utd are these days, post Fergie, Maguire is a good representation.

I can’t decide at this moment in time who is a bigger cancer out of Maguire and Rishi Sunak, and believe me it takes a huge amount for me to ask that

You should add you own name to that question, and you’ll comfortably come out on top. Despicable excuse for a human being.

I liked how when he scored last night he glared back at Ramsdale and looked like he was thinking "Av that you cant."

When is abuse *ever* fair? Why would we even contemplate cultivating and fomenting of a culture of abuse in football; a game that is ultimately just trivial entertainment in the grand scheme of things? It's totally insane.

Maguire hasn't done anything wrong. He hit a bad patch of form, became something of a scapegoat for our woes and then a figure of ridicule. He's been a mainstay in one of the most successful England teams in living memory and had a decent-to-good first half of his United career.

He should have moved away from United this summer and got himself back on track playing regular football for a side that sets up in a way that minimises his weaknesses and best utilises his strengths, but he's certainly not deserving of abuse.

I also thought he was very unlucky with the own goal last night and he otherwise played pretty well.

I fully understand oppo fans mocking him, that’s the life of a footballer, I’ll never understand so called United fans taking to social media to personally attack him

Weirdos

posted on 13/9/23

Why are people blaming Maguire for not moving? United never accepted any of the many offers made for him, no?

He shouldnt be playing for England neither should Phillips, its on Clowngate. Wtf was that sub all about too? deserves it blew up in their faces.

I dont blame Maguire for the OG thats not something to blame him for just unfortunate. He shouldnt be anywhere near the England team though no player who isnt playing regularly at club level should be.

Valid point. Could be because many don't understand how someone like that can play for Utd. If you can't beat the abusers, joining them probably makes them feel a little better.

I also think the abuse would have been far less hostile if Utd were actually doing well. Many are using it as an excuse to take it out on someone, whether it seems fair or not.

Definitely on Southgate.

Love to know why by same token why he's not picking Sterling.

There is plenty of depth in the squad to pick players on form and playing time for club sides.

I was more pointing out calling someone who kicks a ball around a cancer, that’s pretty skummy. And I know you’re way to thick to absorb this, but yet again I’ll point out that I’ve never voted for Tory in my life, not that it’ll stop you continually making things up.

I’ll say with absolute certainty that you wouldn’t speak like you do on here to anyone’s face, though I doubt a socially inept creature like yourself gets to speak to many people in ‘real life’.

I did think the OG was pretty poor, looked like a lazy leg that was just hung out there by a tired defender, except he'd only just come on the pitch.

It's his own fault. Tried to strongbarm the club for 12million thinking if it didn't work he could get a loan somewhere to get games ahead of the Euros. He tried to have his cake and eat it. Not only did he feck himself, he flecked the deal that was ready to sign for Pavard. Whoever his agent and advisors are, are to blame. He's stuck as 5th choice in a system he is not suited to.
If it wasn't for Southgate's codelling, he would have moved the one and only clu who was willing to take him.

posted on 13/9/23

I don’t think there’s any reason to sympathise with him. This is football, everything is public. People shouldn’t criticise him on a personal level, which is a bit out of order tbh. But his performances have been terrible and Southgate hasn’t helped by sticking him in the England team despite not playing for his club. The last thing Maguire needs is more air time. He had the opportunity to move in the summer and get his career back on track potentially but he refused.

No opinion on your debate but ANY comparison between football and cancer should be left the fck alone, appreciate it might not have been your drive but it isn't comparable, in any way

We did, from West Ham.

He may have actually shot himself in the foot financially in the long term by not leaving United.

He may get more money short term at United but if in 2 years he’s still in the same position I can’t see anyone else pay him high wages.

I’m sure West Ham would have offered him a 4-5 year deal on good money.

Terrible player, so he deserves criticism of his performances, but the abuse in football goes too far.

I think I agree with this one.
