This article needs some paragraphs.

Qatar are, within Asia, an average side. Japan, South Korea, Iran, Saudi Arabia and Australia tend to be the top sides and the ones that usually qualify for the World Cup from Asia. From amongst those Japan and South Korea are the top two with Australia the third. I'd place Iran above Saudi.

India losing 3-0 while having a lot of possession in a one of match doesn't really tell us much about whether Qatar is good or India are getting better. You need to watch a succession of matches. Qatar could have had a bad day. But they are better than any of the South Asian Nations. So Indian losing 3-0 would be expected. I assume your friend is please with how they played despite the lost. And we are comparing India and Qatar within Asia. I'd say that could be taken as a good game for Indian football fans. Think of it like San Marino losing only 3-0 to Georgia.
