Surely there must be a concern that even though the XG was so high, it still took two penalties (one of which shouldn't have been given) to score enough to win the game. Its better to have a XG of 4 and score 7, than it is to have an XG of 7 and score 2 from open play.

Salah going to AFCON and potentially missing 3 or 4 games, is enough for Man City to go ahead when on one of their unbeaten runs at this time of the season. As impressive as their chance creation was, they still could have dropped two points today of decisions didn't go their way.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Only one of our goals was a pen.

Plus we've got a very good record without Salah.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

Yeah my mistake. I forgot you missed the first one.

Point still stands though. There surely has to be concerns about the number of chances needed to score. Particularly given the previous 3 games at Anfield.

Whilst you may have a good record without Salah in previous seasons, that was with a different front line and midfield. It doesn't necessarily mean that will continue now.

Agree somewhat, but we did score 3 outfield gls and are 2nd highest scorers in league. Nunez simply has to improve.

High xg is great but if you are scoring about 50% less than your Xg then that could be an issue. NuFC in really poor form so it wasn't costly.

It's not an issue FFS

If we converted any more chances than we do we'd break all the scoring records lol.

----------------------------------------------------------------------
It's only an issue if it's a pattern that's happening regularly. One off games are fine as it'll usually even itself out.

I think when we beat United 7-0 our xG was only about 3.5.

I think if that happens not at Anfield I don't think they're given as pens. I don't think it's corrupt at all. I think it's the 12th man. The crowd. It's impressive.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Disagree, just yet again var going with on field decisions
----------------------------------------------------------------------
The first one isn’t all that contentious. The second one was a bit sus but once they were given they were never going to be overruled as clear and obvious errors.

Liverpool deserved to win. End of!
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Agree. First one isn't a doubt for me. Second one isn't a penalty for me, he could have continued on and scored and therefore the slight touch didn't put him at a disadvantage, before he threw himself to the ground.

Although once the ref gave it because there was contact and therefore the referee felt it put Jota at a disadvantage, VAR is not going to touch it. This is why 'clear and obvious' should go for me.

With expected goals. Does anyone know how the xg works for penalties.

Jota for example before his dive should have had a 0.99 expected goals after rounding the keeper and he dived.
The penalty you then also have a high expected goals.

Same for the first pen, it must be a high xg before the player is fouled.

Or after the fouls are given is the original chance removed from the equation?

Not sure if it's your regular pattern but if you are scoring well below your XG then in those tight games when XG is lower you need to be clinical.

Take the Utd game for example. 30+ shots, 8 on target, Xg 2.4. Scored none!

If we have to go that in depth then it just shows that Xg is nothing but a gimmick, isn’t it?

Well it is, I find it stupid in and of itself but still the record is impressive. liverpool were great lastnight.

Outdo them? Have a day off Termy 🤣

Just reminding the little 5puddie5 how insignficant their club is. What kind of so called "big club" goes over a decade and a half without winning a trophy? It's actually hilarious 👍

I'd assume they don't count the chances leading up to the penalties as they didn't actually shoot.

Penalties themselves are like 0.8xG

Why are we suddenly needing to examine such things? Didn't seem to matter before Liverpool broke the records.

The method of calculating xG is the same for every team and every game so it's a good barometer in that sense.
