He got off because LAPD misconduct created a sympathetic jury who gave OJ a free pass. After the trial some of them said Rodney King influenced their decision.

I think the single biggest problem was holding the trial in downtown Los Angeles. The jury pool was largely black of a lower socio-economic class who lived with LAPD abuses on a near daily basis. This meant the defense could appeal to their emotions and biases. The defense took advantage of the jury’s prejudices and of the three jurors interviewed on film afterwards two said that is what happened. The third said the prosecution did not prove their case. The deliberations, expected to last for weeks, lasted less than four hours. Another factor was the fact the jury had been sequestered for many months and wanted to go home.

The trial should have been moved. However, for political reasons, the prosecution held it downtown because of their confidence in the DNA evidence, which was bulletproof. Simpson should have been convicted.

Had the case been tried just on the DNA evidence Simpson’s guilt was undeniable but it got buried in the many side issues such a Fuhrman’s racism.

The glove was an insurmountable problem. It proved nothing but because Simpson was told to put it on while on camera wearing latex gloves, a stupid move on the part of the prosecution, his inability to put it on went a long way towards sealing the case’s fate by giving a sympathetic jury something to focus on. The demonstration should have taken place in the judge’s chambers without latex gloves. The gloves were large but might have shrunk. This is a classic example of the lawyer axiom, don’t ask a question you don’t know the answer to.

Mark Fuhrman was a disaster for the prosecution. He may have been racist but that doesn’t mean he was corrupt or that he planted evidence. It is unlikely he did. Simpson, as a murderer was an amateur and in an emotionally jacked up state. He made amateur mistakes and left a trail of evidence that unequivocally followed him from Nicole’s home to his house leaving little doubt as to his guilt. But the black community was up in arms at seeing another one of their own being hijacked. Rodney King weighed heavily in their decision according to those interviewed. They had seen it before and they sided with one of their own. Fuhrman taking the fifth didn’t help any.

The Judge was in error when he allowed race to be entered as evidence in respect to Furhrman. Without the race card the Jury would not have been trying the case with their emotions or at least a lot less so. Simpson was a hero to the black community and an attractive defendant. The defense admitted as much and were unapologetic about using race to gain sympathy for their client.

So it is a vicious murderer who killed two innocent people, both white, went free.

I'm HONESTLY flummoxed at that? And that the first time I've ever used "flummoxed" in a post?

The entire thing is usually, more often than not black men would have been found guilty but if you feel differently then fair play

Nonsense, in this particular case his colour was, for once an irrelevance, it was simply his status and hero worship, as said in pretty much any similar case against a black man they would have been found guilty?

And no one should try and get you banned for having an opinion no matter how much I, or others might disagree

It's atrocious, but also quite instructive. It shines a light on how a worldview that purports to be concerned with righting injustice and standing up to power has no interest in the material realities behind the world's power dynamics. Into this vacuum it inserts fantasies where everything is governed by conspiratorial forces. It's a world in which OJ Simpson's acquittal doesn't fit into a pattern of wealthy people using the resources to ensure better treatment by the justice system, but instead is offered as an alternative to the reality of shockingly disproportionate incarceration rates of black Americans, which have continued long since OJ's trial.

RR, cheers far better articulation of what I wanted to say, I appreciate other folk will have diffireng perspectives and opinions but it doesn't make them right but I do defend their right to hold them irrespective of how wrong I personally feel they are.

posted 2 weeks, 5 days ago

The guy did it, no doubt. I don't know if I can say he had a smart lawyer or the prosecutors were a dumb lot. But definitely his acquittal was symptomatic of the complexities of the jury system in a racist and racially divided society.

I only know of OJ Simpson because of Premier league years on Sky sports season 1994-1995. During the episode of that season they briefly mention his trial for like 1 minute. I think the programme Premier league years started around 2000 maybe. The coverage they show of the seasons 1992-1993 up till 2011-2012 was awesome. Ever since though the coverage has been a little disappointing.

It’s crazy what happened to OJ. He was an icon in the states universally loved and thought of as an all around good guy.
I was always watched the oilers and he was always on TV when football was on.

And then he did what he did and it turned into a circus.

Houston Rockets were in the NBA finals against the knicks mid game and they cut off mid game because the OJ bronco chase was happening 😆

That was a crazy day, drunk watching the game at a house party and then it switched to the bronco
