Ange tactics are risky like that but theres room for improvement, that he has to take responsibility for. Can't just say its how we play i ain't changing, don't change just do it better.

i know liverpool could take the foot off the gas yesterday but we could have also given up
theres no way being more defensive guarantees us being more solid either
----------------------------------------------------------------------
This^
When is the last time we had a team at Spurs that could sit back defend and be solid? It's fantasy land stuff. We have never had the players for that and we don't now.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Errr
I would definitely say Poch team with Alderweireld and Vertonghen was a "solid" defence!
----------------------------------------------------------------------
They were very good defenders and better than what we have now, but I pretty sure we didn't just sit back and soak up constant pressure in order to win (or not lose) a game.
while I agree that changing managers every 18th months isn't a recipe for success but there comes a point where its hard to see how things are improving..... Couple of points....
1) Ange has no track record of success in any of top leagues in Europe.
2) Since the first 10 games of last season, our record has been woeful
3) Injuries are of course part of the game but is anyone surprised that a race horse like VDV keeps doing his hammy when he is always sprinting to cover wide open spaces because of gaps we leave at the back. Do we train the same way as we play.. I would assume yes
4) As time ticks by and results come in, our wins at City and United look to be more about how bad they are rather than how good we are.
5) Can anyone name a player that has improved under Ange's coaching ?.. I cant
7) To those who want Ange to have more windows/ build his own team.... He has signed Vic, Dragusin, VDV, Werner, Madders, Solanke, Bergvall, Gray, Odobert, Solanke & Johnson. He also Sanctioned Udogie joining instead of staying in Italy. He made Son Captain and Romero Vice (Indicating it he was happy with them). Its worth noting during Pre season he said he was happy with the squad, having got rid of a lot of players and said we were in a good place in his mind compared to where we were 12 months earlier.
I like Ange but taking credit for Scoring 3 Vs Liverpool (2 when the game was over and they were resting players) doesn't wash with me.
I felt very Sorry for Gray & Grag yesterday, Our tactics gave them no chance against Liverpool.
For me, he needs to stop with the excuses and adjust the way we play. If he doesn't believe in being more pragmatic and showing more in game management then no problem..... Perhaps the Prem is not the place for him.
After 18 Months, we are in the bottom half, the players confidence looks shot. I would honestly be amazed if anyone thinks this team, playing this way is capable of winning 7 0r 8 of the next 10.
I think there are plenty of teams who would wipe the floor with Spurs in any cup competition from here. So i don't see any reason for there to be any optimism going forward.
Spurs have good young players and I suspect that will be our mandate for signings going forward. I would fire Ange now (He simply looks out of his depth). Hire Potter, get the focus back on player improvement and coaching (rather than trying to adapt some [pie in the sky ideology), much like he did at Brighton and go from there.
I don't want to get into an argument re Poch but his early tenure was the best we have had a Spurs for a number of years. A low key manager who makes it about the players, focuses on improvement with some sensible backing seems like a reasonable way forward.

Good article Sandy, Ange has his issues but it’s pretty irrelevant with our injury list. We are playing a prospect for the future fullback as a CB as we have 3 others injured ffs. People have lost all perspective.
Ultimately I don’t think changing Ange makes any difference to our outcome this season + I think he is teaching the players a style of football that the next manager will build on.
What i found hilarious is people on the match thread saying they want Ireola (who I rate) in replace of Ange, when their strengths and what they excel at is so similar it shows that they lack critical thought. It’s very much ‘new shiny manager over there’.
For me with this season the important thing is we keep pushing forward in the cups, which we have done.
1) Ange has no track record of success in any of top leagues in Europe.
**He has had success in every league he has managed so far (apart from the current one)
2) Since the first 10 games of last season, our record has been woeful
**It has but it is a rebuild.
3) Injuries are of course part of the game but is anyone surprised that a race horse like VDV keeps doing his hammy when he is always sprinting to cover wide open spaces because of gaps we leave at the back. Do we train the same way as we play.. I would assume yes
**Yes I think it is but he has alluded to this when he has managed previous clubs that the players start to adapt to his way of training/playing and eventually the injuries become less frequent.
4) As time ticks by and results come in, our wins at City and United look to be more about how bad they are rather than how good we are.
**We also smashed Aston Villa and other teams who have been in form.
5) Can anyone name a player that has improved under Ange's coaching ?.. I cant
**Dejan Kulusevski
7) To those who want Ange to have more windows/ build his own team.... He has signed Vic, Dragusin, VDV, Werner, Madders, Solanke, Bergvall, Gray, Odobert, Solanke & Johnson. He also Sanctioned Udogie joining instead of staying in Italy. He made Son Captain and Romero Vice (Indicating it he was happy with them). **Those players you have mentioned have all been good signings apart from Werner who cost peanuts and wouldn't ever start if we didn't have so many injuries.Odobert has been injured but is young so can't judge yet. If anything you stating this makes me want Ange to stay for more windows.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
I'm not one looking for an argument but we've been poor under Ange even with a full strength team.
He is totally out of his depth and it's a shame
as he is a likeable character.
He needs to work out his tactics and use the players he has to the best of there strengths, yesterdays score flattered us , Liverpool could have had double figures if they had been more clinical.

Simply cannot keep changing managers every 18 months just because the fans say so. United have just changed a manager who won a couple of trophies, for one that is getting even worse results.
I will judge a manager after three full seasons, even if he has a few poor results.

100 per cent correct. The new flavour of the month manager seems to be the Bournemouth manager. Kneejerk stuff.
I said a while back the cups were the way forward for Spurs this season. Still in three. Hopefully with players coming back in January can still be a decent season.
Good article Sandy,
Totally agree with you about these “fans” who cry out with the manager without thinking it through.
Whilst things are not great at present, it is far more complicated than just replacing the manager everytime we hit a bad patch.
The club have a track record of signing young players who will fetch good prices in the future if we do not keep them. I think this is a reasonable tactic, but should be run alongside signing established PL & International players to ensure progress in competitions.
Like you, I feel that Ange needs 3 full seasons to reach where he needs to be.
I also detest these ex pros who have never managed at any level all know better than someone who has done it for 25+ years.
Finally on yesterday’s game, most fans including myself thought it would be a tough call to beat the most in form team in the PL. it would have been tough with our first choice defence, but with a back four playing together for the first team it was a big ask.
I am also in the camp that thinks we have emerged from the dark times of Mourinho & Conte and dire football to once again being (irrespective of results) the most entertaining team in the division.
Yes, I would like us to be higher in the league, but the PL is now at its most competitive and there are still 21 games to go so anything can and most likely will happen between now and May.

Fair enough.... I don't think Levy will keep Ange if there's no European football as a result of this season and I don't expect us to make the European places or win a cup. A good league performance is defined by consistency & a good cup run is defined by the ability to play well in a big game, under high pressure and against a good team (in its later stages).... That aint Spurs & that aint Ange.... Allowing him to sign more players isn't gonna stop opposition managers recognizing our CM plays to high and its easy to pass through its press and that there's acres of space behind our FBs, stretching our CBS to breaking point (literally and figurately.

A season can turn very quickly. Spurs are still involved in 3 cup competitions with lots of their better players to return. Come back in May, and you may have a point. Bit premature though just to dismiss Spurs before even half the season has finished.
I remember 1966/67 season. Spurs were like 10th going into the New Year. Ended up 3rd in the table and won the cup. Never write off any team, anything can happen.

Spurs may be 11th. But the gap from 5th to 11th is not that great. Still over half a season to play. 10, 15, 20 point gaps have been overturned from Xmas onwards.

This is perfect
Sandy
Forgive me if I don't weep for you given how kneejerk you've been in the past, with managers that have justified our support far more than Ange has. That's a debate we've done to death though and you already know how I feel about that. I'm bored of spitting facts frankly.
Onto Ange - so you're of the belief that everything about where we are and how we're currently playing is down to the injury crisis? Sure, it takes a portion of the blame. I'm not disputing that. But when you break down the numbers you soon realise that it's only part of the problem. Since the Chelsea home game last year, if you measured from that point to the end of last season, we lost one more game than we'd won. From the start of this year to now, we've lost one more game than we've won. We are the very definition of a mid-table club despite our spend on wages and transfers putting us into the top 6 bracket. By any measure, whether you take into account injuries or not, that's a sub-par performance.
I've said this on another thread but when you take a Spurs job, given we don't spend as much as the big boys, pragmatism is a vital ingredient in any tactical set up. It's admirable, but foolhardy to go toe to toe with teams who have deeper resources than we do. That's why the lower down the league you go, the more you're likely to see teams sit and counter. It's a by-product of not having the same resources because ultimately it's the best way of getting results under those conditions. So what we're left with, given we play one way, is that we're routinely outplayed by the better teams, and we're tactically outsmarted by the smaller teams. That's why we've lost as many as we've won over the last year. Ange's inflexibility has 100% contributed to our towering stack of losses. What I mean by that is something Diamond alluded to - if you know that you've got 4 of your preferred back line missing, perhaps it's a good idea to ask your midfielders to protect them a little more. Perhaps it's a good idea to occasionally make your full backs a little more cautious instead of bombing on and leaving them exposed.
Of course the players love it. They don't have to worry about complex tactical instructions. Real winners, the likes of which I believe we only have one in Kulu, won't stand for simple instructions like the others would if they lead to losses. Ultimately winners want to win. We really can't use the messages of players in the media as a measure of Ange's qualities. Players like an easy life. They clock in, clock out, get paid and have fun playing football. The true winners really, really graft and they're held accountable for losses. It just doesn't happen at Spurs. There's a losing culture embedded into the club.
The perfect hybrid really would be an Ange/Conte. Someone that has respect for flamboyance and the artistry of total football but someone who first and foremost wants to win, however that's achieved. We've gone from one extreme to another and from my perspective, both are wrong, and no return of injured players will ever really change that.

----------------------------------------------------------------------
How are we pushing forwards? We are 11th ? and went backwards for 3/4 of last season. Any idiot can say... "Just attack" but football is about what you do with and without the ball. Nobody is questioning that we are good with the ball going forwards, but we can't stop the opposition..... Are any of you old enough to see what happened with Ardiles in charge.. It was exactly the same.. except we had far better players and it still didn't work
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Spurs may be 11th. But the gap from 5th to 11th is not that great. Still over half a season to play. 10, 15, 20 point gaps have been overturned from Xmas onwards.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
You have to win more games than you lose to overturn a points differential!!! .... You might wanna take a look at our record over the past 12 months. We lose as many as we win and dont pick up draws !!!
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Yes with an injury ravaged squad. How many more times do you need telling?

Difference between last season and this, is that going into the Bew Year despite all thr injuries Ange has steered Spurs to a league cup semi, almost certainly into the last 16 of the Europa, and still with the FA Cup to come.
Nobody knows how it will pan out from now until May, so why are you judging a manager in December? Poch had five seasons with a mostly fully fit squad at his disposal, Ange has had 18 months of near on constant disruption.

i know liverpool could take the foot off the gas yesterday but we could have also given up
theres no way being more defensive guarantees us being more solid either

**Those players you have mentioned have all been good signings apart from Werner who cost peanuts and wouldn't ever start if we didn't have so many injuries.Odobert has been injured but is young so can't judge yet. If anything you stating this makes me want Ange to stay for more windows.

You have to win more games than you lose to overturn a points differential!!! .... You might wanna take a look at our record over the past 12 months. We lose as many as we win and dont pick up draws !!!

while I agree that changing managers every 18th months isn't a recipe for success but there comes a point where its hard to see how things are improving.....
