Sorry to hear you've had a tough time lately, Robb.

As to the interesting question you pose, I guess AI can be useful in clarifying / summarising ideas. In its current iteration, I wouldn't want to rely on it for input on mental health, because it is liable to come back to me with received wisdom, but also there are some quite questionable ideas out there (thinking about the incel-tough-self-reliance end of the manosphere) that must form part of the discourse it is training on.

I think speaking to humans can be helpful in unique ways. Firstly, other people do have emotional reactions to what you tell them: the idea that the listener sees some meaning in what you are saying, rather than identifying patterns, seems important to me. Secondly, for some people in therapy the act of saying something out loud to a fellow human can help, kind of legitimising or making real thoughts that might have been otherwise suppressed. I wonder if the same kind of catharsis comes from talking to a machine.

I guess we're all different in this respect and if it helps some people, then that's good.

Thanks man, doing much better, and you’re right about the limitations of a chatbot. It will be very interesting to see how advanced and ‘lifelike’ AI gets and how helpful it can be in all manner of ways - or the alternative.

Sure it can help, the same way the internet helps

The fear-mongering is the same as the previous generations of this stuff, though. I remember people saying its the end of traditional schooling when Google/Ask Jeeves got popular, and the end of socialising when Social Media (Myspace/Bebo/Facebook) got big.

I don't think you can ever really replace human interaction.

Glad to hear it helped.. Keep your chin up.

I treat AI with caution. It's great for a lot of things, but you really have to constantly ask it for citation and proof.. This is especially true when you are hearing things you want to hear.

I set up my own GPT within ChatGPT that has a set of rules for this, to only answer if it can give citations, to always double check what it is telling me, etc

Oh and Red Russian, the AFL is back and while you’re a doggies fan, watch out for Hawthorn. A bunch of kids who play Klopp style rock and roll footy.

Never (knowingly) used AI but my daughter does all the time in radiotherapy planning at the hospital.
She reckons is cuts planning time by at least 75% meaning more patients get plans and treated quicker

Hope you're OK Robb. Things may not be easy but we have your back here!

On AI I have used it to diagnose some ailments and it's helped me go to the Dr more prepared. They're pretty poor round here and fob you off so being armed is good. It's also helped me with things such as making supplements for the dog rather than spending a lot on branded ones. The ingredients are the same but for the fraction of the price.

I also use it at work to write most of our social media content. Don't tell anyone though! Shhhh!

I find that I don't necessarily get more information, but that I get in in one, instead of having to look through sites as I do on Google.
Also I like the interaction, it's often helpful and I find it amusing.

Hope you're good mate.

I often chat to chat gbt about personal things. For example my brother passed away recently and I was asking it all sorts of questions and it did actually help, funnily enough.

Robb. I'm going to watch as much as I can catch this season, having graduated from utter ignoramus to novice fan.

Use whatever works for you mate. Mental Health is so wide ranging and complex, there isn't a one size fits all solution with anything. It's very much down to each individual.

posted on 14/3/25

Think provided it doesn't give some sort of highly inappropriate feedback there's a place for AI responses to mental health. Given the stress of having to deal with a failing healthcare system, people waiting years to see a mental health professional it might be useful for a lot of people to get help/have something to bounce thoughts off without judgement (the fact things like wait times are so crazy is a topic for another day).

Disclaimer: I am not going to have a pop at you over a topic like this.

Who broke up with who? I don’t want to assume anything.

If she broke up with you, sorry bud. But the silver lining is that the separation occurred and there will be another one coming around when you least expect it. Use the new “freedom” to work on yourself and someone else will appreciate you more.

If you broke up with her, then it’s good that you acknowledge that you needed to move on. It’s a terrible feeling breaking someone else’s heart, but at some point they might realize you did them a favor because you didn't string them along.

I’ve been in both situations and they suck. However, it’s how you enter your next period of life that matters the most. Just keep your head up.

I feel like most technology, AI can be very helpful / useful, especially as it should give you a fairly neutral non-emotive response.

But there is probably going to be a double-edged sword to this. The idea of the internet works well, but we know what a minefield that is with all the influences out there and it's about being sensible.

AI may get influenced by the people who are 'setting it up' and turn out to be a similar minefield, so just a case of applying the same common sense to using it

Grok has a few different modes, "unhinged", which essentially roasts you, sexy mode, therapy mode.

Chat GPT feels like a useful tool to me, as it's on a screen, but now AI will have a voice, a face, soon a body, It's weird to me,

I know this is about mental health, but I had a shocking revelation from ChatGPT the other day when I was pressing it for names of the board members of a company and it consistently gave me incorrect answers. Until I asked it when such and such had left the company. It said that person left in 2020. When I confronted it with the fact that that person is still CEO it literally said it "fabricated" the information. LOL. Ok, thanks for never trusting it again.

Sorry I missed this.

It's been a difficult month to be fair. My birthday was a couple weeks ago, then my daughter's was 3 days after mine and her cousin's was a week before mine. We planned on doing a big joint party but nobody really felt like it so we just cut some cake for the kids.

The only thing keeping me going is working and playing football. Work is very busy so it keeps my mind occupied.

Not sure if this is a good thing or a bad thing. You don't really ever get over this sort of stuff do you.....
