Go Dogs! (Before I knew anything about the sport, before I'd really figured out the rules, before I'd settled on the Bulldogs as my team, one thing I understood: to hate Collingwood.)

To the uninitiated among our community, while you may recall rare occasions when Robb was wrong about something, he's totally right about Aussie Rules. It fluctuates between chaotic scraps and beautifully elegant passages of play. And it's the best place to see a glorious mullet + moustache combo running free in its natural environment.

Vicious

For the uninitiated amongst us, why should we hate Collingwood, please? Are they biters? T-shirt printers?

Their fans are eerily similar to Liverpool fans from a socio-economic standpoint and also from a chip on shoulder one. And club wise they have a weird amount of power where they don’t always have to go play away at rivals. Imagine a scenario where Liverpool played their away games at Anfield instead of say, Villa Park against Villa due to fan size. As they’re the biggest club they get some weird perks. Other than that the AFL is very egalitarian compared to the PL

No nothing about the sport but as a kid often caught the bits on Saturday afternoons on World Of Sport in between the Wrestling and the final scores on the VidiPrinter. Often featured a team called Hawthorn who played in Yelo and black stripes and as it sounded like an English football ground.. they became my team. C'mon The Hawks

As it turns out they’re the favourites this season to win the whole thing so you’re in luck. They have a young side not unlike Fergies fledglings who play with zero fear.

Robb can verify whether this is really a thing, but I had a subjective impression that there's a fair number of Collingwood glory supporters and/or people who aren't necessarily into the sport who latch on because they're the biggest name.

That is indeed very true. They do have the most vociferous of fans but it’s evened out by the large number of fair weather ones who couldn’t name a single player other than Nick Daicos (the Cole Palmer of the league).

Never got into it but the pitch size is huge and the smallest can be half the area of the biggest which seems weird.

Darcy of the Bulldogs is insanely good. Possibly the next big thing in the game (and he’s 6 ft 8 so literally and figuratively)

Would Dan Burn would do well at Ozzie Rules then. He kinda plays it in the PL already?

Possibly but he’d need to be able to catch a ball under huge pressure and kick with world class accuracy.

Are there examples of players from other sports making relatively late changes to AFL (the way you see some rugby players change codes or try out in NFL)? I guess from football, a goalkeeper might have slightly more transferable skills: catching the ball, competing for aerial balls from corners, kicking the ball from hands...

I can’t think of many but a few Irish players from Gaelic football have come over and done well as it’s not entirely different. But from an association football perspective you might be right - a goalkeeper who’s used to coming for corners and taking the ball would have certain advantages.

Robb compared Collingwood to Liverpool, but I think it could be reasonably argued that the valid reasons a lot of people have for hating us (size of club / disproportionate weight in the discourse around the sport / glory hunter fans) also make Collingwood the United of the AFL.

Whisper it but Collingwood are so annoyingly popular they’re like United and Liverpool combined.
