Maybe that was an added bonus (although who knows how much he hates United - when the relationship soured, it was a different coach and, if I recall correctly, not yet the Ineos leadership team). I think his moves this summer can be explained by self-interest + inflated sense of worth. He wanted to keep his current salary to the end of the contract. And I guess he chose to have greater freedom of choice / potential signing on bonus coming from being out of contract next season.

I remember my old mate Robbsie telling us all that the club should pay Dortmund and Sancho whatever it takes to sigh him.

He may even have described him as a generational talent, but I could be wrong on that.

He’s probably got a loyalty bonus in his contract if he sees it out.

Probably just doesn't want to commit yet while he still has a big salary, could raise his profile with a productive loan (unlikely I know) and could get a tidy signing on fee next year. The guy seems like a belllend but you can undersrtand that thinking.
