Farke said we don’t have the quality of players
to match other teams so we have to work harder
to avoid mistakes.

^^^

He's said this a few times now. It's not helpful
if taken verbatim. But part of me thinks maybe
this is a case of 'English is his second language'
and his actual meaning is lost in translation.

At least I hope that's why.

I said before the match if we get a point out of
the Bournemouth fixture, I'll start believing we
can actually stay up. I'm now believing.

The team look solid at this level.

I think Bournemouth are an excellent team that will give everyone trouble, so IMO we belong. We've played well every game, even parts of the Arsenal one.
Expect the same against Tottenham who didn't look that great against Wolves.

Quite a few 'experts' wrote off the Longstaff signing. Hope they can admit they were wrong.

Gudmundson and Stach are amazing signings when you think about it.

How we managed to get both of them ahead of other teams is a proper head scratcher.

How these guys were overlooked is beyond me when you look at stachs stats not just since arriving but last season in Germany and how good a leftback Gudmundson is when leftbacks are a position lots of teams struggle to fill.

Add to that Tanaka last season and its three players who really should have been picked up by teams with the money to gazump us.

I'm delighted he has so far proved his worth and I actually never wrote him off but I have given our owners and recruitment team a right royal slagging so I'm still some way off from retracting those critisisms but I am relieved that the bulk of the new signings are looking to be of EPL survival quality so far and will reserve my apologies until we are mathematically safe from the drop next year.

I like Farke and I think he’s doing a good job… I think he’s also right that we lack the technical quality of most teams and make up for it with application, organisation and grit.

The fact that it’s true doesn’t mean it needs saying. Just like constantly reminding everyone we’re a newly promoted side doesn’t need saying. I think it’s a reminder to everyone that he’s overachieving. But he probably is so I’ll give him a pass.

Originally I thought Longstaff was a good signing then I had a few doubts until I realized the people who were doubting his ability knew even less about football then me. I'm happy with all our signings with the exception of our first signing nmecha but I'll happily hold my hands up if he comes good.
Aaronson on the other hand I think shouldn't be on the team, not a popular view on this board but who cares.

Your comment is really pertinent; way beyond football, when we allow use existing prejudices against any individual or group as a starting point for criticism, any objectivity has immediately gone out of the window.

As with many of you, I too have had to eat my words, not least on Okafor, as I’d really wanted to see Manor back through the door.

Even DCL looks like he will be excellent value for money, providing he stays fit for a sufficient portion of the season. Between him and Nmecha, they should be positive additions to Joel Piroe.

That said, the guy Kevin of Fulham still looks great value even at that price. Would have liked to have seen us get a player like him!

One step at a time, and as long as we are still walking at the end of this season, we can start to run in the next couple of years as financial constraintsease.

Good post!

As for Bournemouth - I think that’s four visits now where we’ve failed to beat them.

The great thing is that some of their fans expected an easy 3 points. How wrong they were!

As for Longstaff - I think he’s getting transferred into my Dream Team today!

I am sure when we have those kinds of funds for one player then we will sign people like Kevin.

You're right, Milky, it doesn't need saying. I think there may be a cultural aspect to this, as Germans tend to be direct and honest ('It just saves time', I was told by a German friend).
But it grated with me when I read it.

I always thought farke was overly diplomatic when we were in the Chamionship.

Now we are in the Prem he just says what he thinks, which is very refreshing

Think it's just a difference in what they mean by quality. For Farke it is a comparative to the other sides we have played, where we objectively have less quality in depth than they do. You look at the players Bournemouth are able to bring on, for instance. He's saying you have to make up for that with pragmatism. He's nor saying the players have no quality generally.

Longstaff is talking about a different aspect of quality I think, and is embracing the ability to be pragmatic as part of the discussion of quality.

They're also just both going to have very different views and outlooks, because there a huge difference coming from a manager and player. If Farke was saying we have the quality to match teams at this level without the pragmatic approach then I would be concerned. That's what got two of the three sides relegated last season

The main purpose this season is just to stay up and then we can build on the squad like the likes of Bournemouth have done.

I read that we only had ever played Bournemouth 14 times in our entire history. Mainly because when we were an established Prem team they were languishing in the lower leagues.
