One of the worst referees in the league has the facking gall to say this

"Ok but can we expect you to get a blatant red card correct after looking at it for 4 minutes?"

Which one was this?

A lot of football decisions are subjective.

On that basis i think that the 'on field decision' taking precedence is the right approach but the system could be tweaked.

SO, for example if a player goes down in the box, and the ref doesnt give a penalty, if he relayed his reasonining, instantly to VAR then it can be checked.

SO if he said, not a dangerous tackle and the player got something on the ball first , then VAR can look at it on that basis. Was his reasoning correct.

SO take the NUFC / Arsenal non pen, If the ref reports, a non dangerous tackle but got nothing on the ball and is proved wrong then its a simple over rule of his reasoning.

VAR needs to know the basis of the on-field refs decision first, before deciding whether he needs to reconsider.

That way it isnt, re-reffing the game, its simply refining the on-field refs decision making.

Also, these things happen so fast that sometimes a ref might need that safety net and i think they should be able to send themselves to the monitor...."i didnt see that clearly" or something like that, allowing themselves to look at it properly.

Exactly. We were terrible that day but if the right decision was made, chances are we don't lose that game.

It wasn't a difficult decision.

Who expects perfection? I'm pretty sure most people who tune in to football expect a low standard of refereeing from our British refs nowadays, which is what we get.

I don’t expect perfection, but most of the time even competence would be nice.

typical sob story from the refs, who apparently are the real victims in all this

The article's headline reads "Stop expecting perfection from us" - top referee". Open line follows up with "Premier League referee Antony Taylor"

I belly laughed so hard

How are there none of these sob stories in rugby?

posted 1 week, 3 days ago

the problem with POGMOL is that they think they're above the law a bit like the SPG back in the 80's.

No self awareness, big egos (howard webb) and no accountability.

They want us to believe they are all fair, make honest mistakes and have no biases, but the truth is in plain sight and I'm sure if we looked at the data, this would be confirmed.

Said this 100 times before, PGMOL is football’s equivalent of the IDF. Terrorists that portray themselves as victims. More important than anyone else, and beyond criticism.

It should be perfection. They have multiple camera angles and slow motion replays. How can they still get it wrong with all the help they have.

All we wanted was clear and obvious (Hand of god) etc

Taylor is absolutely right.

Go to watch children’s football and see the awful effect that top level football is having in terms of a lack of respect and abusive behaviour.

He's right about part of his argument, that doesnt make him absolutely right though

No it doesn’t, but I’d be interested to hear anything he said that you disagree with.

I agree with a lot of what he says, but saying that criticism basically only comes cos people only watch through the eye of their teams is a kopout.

There's been countless terrible decisions in games I dont give a shiiiit about - the standard just isn't good enough with the resepuces available.

Great point.

I will be watching Wigan tonight and there's one reason, in my mind (pitchforks at the ready people), that we see Rugby League get it right and the Premier League don't; the amount of money involved.

And the amount of betting involved.

This is a funny take, because it assumes everything else is the same.

Look at the level of cheating in football. The exaggerations, the feigned pain… no one ever mentions that when a referee makes a mistake, do they?
