Brilliant player but I’d argue he could been more ruthless.
He was generally a 15-20 goal per season player but had the ability to hit closer to Salah like numbers imo.
I’m paraphrasing here but I remember Gary Neville saying something like he tends to play like his team are 3-0 up when they are 1-0 up.

Great player with unreal talent but did he ever do much in Europe (or even for Belgium)? Always felt like while he could score a brilliant solo goal he also probably could have done a lot more more consistently.

I agree, his move to Real was just a big mistake that ended up with him retiring at 32. But he did achieve something in Europe.
posted 1 week, 3 days ago
Winning 2 EL doesn't really mean much for a player who is being described as a great tbh. I genuinley don't recall big CL games where he turned up and performed which I think you can for most top top players.

Great player to watch, unbelievable technical ability. A shame Chelsea bought him illegally

Chelsea won one of their league titles cos of him. Sensational player, and probably the last of the real superstar individual in this league.

No need to take these things too seriously. And it's all very subjective. On a personal note, I am surprised that the likes of Vidic and VDS are still to be inducted, Giggs has been left out for obvious reasons, and if push came to shove, I wouldn't have had Ian Wright in there in front of other players still to get in.
I would say the same of Hazzard, but could see him being in there at some point.
Of course it will be dominated by players from the top clubs, but would be nice to see the likes of Le Tissier etc get in

Wasn't it mostly due to injury and a lack of hands on physio during Covid?
By all accounts, he was very lazy, didn't train properly, just turned up and his ability carried him through. When he had to manage his own rehabilitation he didn't really bother.

Not sure that's the case. Bit like saying VVD or Salah have wasted their careers at Liverpool in some ways.
posted 1 week, 2 days ago
Again, domestically he did well which is why he's been inducted into the PL Hall of Fame and 2 PLs, 1 FA Cup and 1 League Cup aint bad for 7 seasons but it's in Europe where he falls short for me. Whereas players like Salah and VVD have performed in Europe consistently (CL not EL which means nothing) and been integral to their team reaching 3 finals and winning 1.
I think when you fail to perform outside your domestic league it is harder to guage how good a player really is. I've always felt the same about Totti who in Itay is regarded as one of the greatest players ever to play in Serie A but because I haven't really watched it since the 90s and he didn't do much in the CL I've never really seen the fuss.
