Billy Bingham, the most successful manager of Northern Ireland's football team, has died at the age of 90.
The former Northern Ireland manager was diagnosed with dementia in 2006 and he died peacefully in a nursing home in Southport on Thursday evening.
Renowned as a master tactician, the wily Bingham guided the boys in green to the 1982 and 1986 World Cup finals.
Northern Ireland were the last winners of the defunct British Championship, lifting the trophy in 1984.
Bingham also managed Everton and the Greek national team and played for Northern Ireland at the 1958 World Cup finals in Sweden.
His son David said the family were "very proud of all our dad achieved".
"Dad was diagnosed with dementia back in 2006 and I think it is a tribute to his will that he managed another 16 years from that diagnosis to the time he passed away," he added.
The Irish Football Association said it had learned of Bingham's death with "great sadness".
"Billy holds a unique place in the football hearts of Northern Ireland in that he both played at and managed in World Cup final tournaments with Northern Ireland, being part of Peter Doherty's historic team of 1958 in Sweden and then managing Northern Ireland in the 1982 and 1986 finals," said Northern Ireland's football governing body.
During his second spell in charge, Northern Ireland pulled off some unlikely victories, most notably when they stunned 1982 World Cup hosts Spain on a famous Friday night in Valencia when Gerry Armstrong hit the winner.
The 1-0 win in stiflingly hot conditions remains one of the most remarkable upsets in World Cup history.
Reacting to Bingham's death, Armstrong described the Belfast man as "Northern Ireland's greatest manager" and expressed "heartfelt condolences" to his family.
"Who can forget the wonderful memories that Billy has left us with," added the former Northern Ireland striker.
Bingham's club career included helping Everton with the English League title in 1963 and the Goodison Park club said it was "deeply saddened" to learn of his passing.

Northern Ireland boss Ian Baraclough has said the country's legendary manager Billy Bingham was someone that everyone adored and who will never be forgotten.
Bingham died aged 90 in a nursing home in Southport on Thursday evening.
He was NI's most successful manager, guiding the country to the 1982 and 1986 World Cup finals.
"He is a legend within Northern Irish football for what he did for the country," Baraclough said.
There will be a minute's applause to honour the former Everton manager before Northern Ireland's Nations League match against Cyprus at Windsor Park on Sunday.
Jimmy Nicholl played in both World Cups under Bingham and is now part of Baraclough's coaching staff - and the manager said he often asks Nicholl how the legendary boss would react in certain situations.
"I'm always peppering Jimmy with questions such as 'what would Billy do in this situation and what was Billy like?'," continued Baraclough, who revealed that he was in Spain on a family holiday while the World finals were hosted there in 1982.
"Jimmy is always one for a story and they are all good ones, all positive ones. Billy is somebody that everybody adored and looked up to. He will never be forgotten for his achievements, not just as manager but also for playing in the 1958 World Cup finals."
Prospective owner Chris Kirchner remains in the UK and determined to complete his purchase of Derby County, despite missing the Friday 17:00 BST deadline set by the club's administrators to show he would be able to proceed.
Although administrators Quantuma are now talking to other parties, and are understood to have made contact with the team handling Mike Ashley's effort to buy Derby late on Friday, Kirchner remains in a strong position given his deal has been accepted and he has passed the English Football League's owners' and directors' test.
Derby's administrators said in a statement on Saturday that they wanted to "reassure all parties and supporters that they do not discriminate against any party, if a bid is deliverable and credible".
They added: "The joint administrators wish to confirm they are engaging with a number of parties who have expressed a desire to acquire the club.
"As confirmed in [Friday's] update, Mr. Kirchner is one of those parties, as he continues to seek to provide us with satisfactory evidence that he is in a position to complete the acquisition of the club."
BBC Sport has been told the hold-up around Kirchner's deal is that his funds are currently sitting in a clearing account awaiting anti-money laundering approvals. It is not known when these checks will be completed.
