Chelsea escaped suffering a historic loss to Qarabag through substitute Alejandro Garnacho's second-half equaliser, avoiding the embarrassment of becoming the first English team to lose to the Azerbaijani side.
Garnacho equalised having come on as one of three half-time substitutes with his side 2-1 down after goals from Leandro Andrade and Marko Jankovic had put the hosts ahead following Estevao Willian's early opener for the Blues.
Qarabag had lost all seven of their previous matches against English opposition. The last time they were in the Champions League, they faced Chelsea and lost both matches by an aggregate score of 10-0 and secured just two points from six matches.
However, they gave Enzo Maresca's side a real scare at the packed 32,000-seater Tofiq Bahramov Stadium, with a squad worth just £22m compared to that of Chelsea - valued at £1.5bn, according to figures by Transfermarkt.

Cypriot champions Pafos picked up their first ever win in the Champions League proper as they stunned Villarreal.
The hosts, formed only 11 years ago, have lost just one of their 10 matches in the competition this season, including qualifiers - and that was to Bayern Munich.
And this was another landmark moment for the team managed by ex-Arsenal assistant Juan Carlos Carcedo.
Dutch defender Derrick Luckassen scored the historic winner with an unmarked header following a 46th-minute corner from former Watford winger Ken Sema.
Cyprus' president Nikos Christodoulides, a Pafos fan, reportedly missed the goal - taking his seat a minute after Luckassen had nodded in.
Villarreal, who are yet to win in Europe this season but third in La Liga, had the bulk of the game's chances but could not beat Pafos keeper Neofytos Michail.
Pafos are playing their home games at the Alphamega Stadium in Limassol, which is about 40 miles away as their own ground does not meet Uefa requirements.
They were formed in 2014 when two clubs from the region merged - AEK Kouklia and AEP Paphos - who themselves had been part of a merger of two other teams in 2000.
They started in the second tier and bounced around between that and the top flight until the 2017 takeover by Roman Dubov, a Russian businessman with British citizenship who had a spell as Portsmouth owner in 2011.
Since Carcedo's arrival in 2023 they have won their first two trophies - the Cypriot Cup in 2024 and the league last season - and reached the knockout stages of the Conference League on their European debut in the previous campaign.
Their big summer signing was David Luiz, the ex-Arsenal, Chelsea and Brazil defender, who played 90 minutes in this match to help keep out a Villarreal attack featuring ex-Premier League players Ayoze Perez, Nicolas Pepe and Manor Solomon.

Pauline Collins, the star of the film Shirley Valentine, for which she was Oscar nominated in 1990, has died at the age of 85.
She died "peacefully" aged 85 in her London care home surrounded by her family having had Parkinson's disease for several years, her family said.
Collins will best remembered for her portrayal of disgruntled housewife Shirley in Lewis Gilbert's award-winning film, based on the acclaimed stage play by Willy Russell.
Her critically acclaimed performance also won her the Golden Globe Award for best actress along with a Bafta.

Collins' family said in a statement: "Pauline was so many things to so many people, playing a variety of roles in her life. A bright, sparky, witty presence on stage and screen. Her illustrious career saw her play politicians, mothers and queens.
"She will always be remembered as the iconic, strong-willed, vivacious and wise Shirley Valentine - a role that she made all her own. We were familiar with all those parts of her because her magic was contained in each one of them."
They added she was their "loving mum, our wonderful grandma and great-grandma", and actor John Alderton's "life-long love".
"Warm, funny, generous, thoughtful, wise, she was always there for us," they said, thanking her carers, who looked after her with "dignity, compassion, and most of all love".
"She could not have had a more peaceful goodbye. We hope you will remember her at the height of her powers; so joyful and full of energy; and give us the space and privacy to contemplate a life without her."

Collins first played the title role of Shirley Valentine at the Vaudeville Theatre in London in 1988. She won that year's Olivier award for best actress.

The film of the same name was released later that year.
Her other films included 1991's City of Joy with Patrick Swayze, filmed in Calcutta, which brought her wider recognition globally.
Born in Exmouth in 1940, Collins was raised near Liverpool and started out her career as a teacher.
Her love of the stage led her to take up acting on a part-time basis, and in 1957 she had a cameo role as a nurse in the Emergency Ward 10 TV series.
She starred in the film Secrets of a Windmill Girl in 1966, playing a fictional dancer in a London striptease nightclub, the Windmill Theatre.
After a number of stage roles, she used her Liverpool accent to land a role on The Liver Birds.

Hundreds of protesters have descended on Birmingham ahead of the controversial Aston Villa match against Maccabi Tel Aviv.
A huge police operation with more than 700 officers, dogs, horses and drones is under way for the Uefa Europa League match, which kicks off at 20:00 GMT.
Ch Supt Tom Joyce said several groups had been expected to protest, including pro-Palestinian and pro-Israeli campaigners, in the wake of the controversial decision to ban away fans from the game.
"We police football matches a lot. We police protests a lot. We deal with all sorts of public order scenarios, but certainly the level of interest, the level of concern around this match is pretty unprecedented," he said.

Craig Bellamy has been thwarted in his bid for Celtic forward Callum Osmand to represent Wales at senior level.
The 19-year-old was born in Jersey, which allowed him to represent Wales at both under-16 and under-17 level.
But a change in rules surrounding footballers born in the Channel Islands means he is now only available for England.
Osmand's Wales age-grade appearances were allowed because, previously, players born in the Crown Dependencies - that include the Channel Islands - could do so.
However, players from British Crown Dependencies which are not full Fifa or Uefa members can now only represent England as, unlike fellow Jersey-born Wales U21s player Luke Harris, Osmand has no Welsh heritage.
Similarly Australia-born Lyndon Dykes is eligible for Scotland through his Scottish parents.
"I like him, but unfortunately he's not on the radar to be able to play for us," said Bellamy.
"If he was it would have been a completely different conversation I would love to have had. I would liked to have talked about it all."

A plaque honouring World Cup-winning goalkeeper Gordon Banks has been unveiled in his home city.
Born in 1937 in Abbeydale, Sheffield, the footballer was an integral part of England's victorious 1966 campaign.
Banks, who died aged 81 in 2019, is also famously remembered for his wonder save to deny Brazil legend Pele during the subsequent World Cup.
Those gathered at the unveiling, marking the location where he was born, included Pulp drummer Nick Banks, the goalkeeper's nephew.
"We've got a World Cup winner that came from this city," he said.
"That's something that should be shouted from the rooftops."
The plaque, installed on the side of Jameson's Tearooms on Abbeydale Road, is close to the since-demolished Arthur Road birthplace of the footballer.
