It was definitely a possibility for Utd to struggle to get top 4 this year because of the strength of City, Chelsea and resurgence of Liverpool however when you look at the shambles at Spurs, the Arsenal collapse and the fact Everton are looking likely to get 4th no-one can say Fergie wouldn't have Utd in the mixer.

So take in the obvious strenghtening of the other contenders.
The deterioration in utds squud with the failure to address it adequately last summer.
Then throw into the mix an injury blighted season especially to the one player credited with getting utd the title last season and the top 4 isnt as much a gimme as one would think.
Fergies genius would have been tested to the very limits this season with those circumstances.
