I make my own burgers, wipes the floor with anything you buy. Made some South Korean burgers last night. Made with Gochujang paste and a Kimchi mayo, stuffed with mature cheddar. It was immensely juicy, where it’s dribbling down your chin. Beautiful!

It's all about balance really.

Restricting yourself to a 'narrow' diet in today's current production & consumption climate, is probably the worst thing you can do to your body.

In the prehistoric days our diet was determined by our environment. If you were in a densely vegetated place, you ate more fruits and vegetables. If you were in colder harsher environments you ate more meat.

However in today's world, there's literally an abundance of both so finding the balance between your fruit & veg and meat intake is probably better than leaning more towards either one.

I would eat that now. Sounds lush.

I am bang into making my own soups at the moment. I love cooking anyway but homemade soup is great. Proper labour of love.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Been having a lot of soups lately too, its winter in NZ so its a good time for them.

My fiance made an amazing potato soup the other week. I make a good pumpkin one.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
What's winter like in NZ? I'm imagining British weather in stunning scenery.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Depends where you live, north island is very mild, apart from Wellington.

I live in the South Island, stunning scenery, frosty mornings but clear sunny days. Last year we took a trip down to Queenstown and everything was snow capped but was beautiful sunshine weather. Was pretty great.

We get a bit of rain too, but not too much where i live.

The payoff just doesn't cut the work that goes into it for me. I like cooking, but soup just doesn't interest me in any way.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

I hear ya, it's all about the stock really.

I have started eating more meat again and unfortunately it's great, I feel better and it tastes nice.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
A number of people who I know that have stopped eating meat temporarily and then restarted have said the same. Really not convinced stopping makes you healthier in any way really.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

I feel so much better. Tbf cooking vegan is an absolute ball ache in comparison.

I do love the animals though. But they also taste good.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
From an environmental standpoint just eating meat less is the perfect balance apparently.

Literally everything that us humans consume is mass produced and harmful to the environment. The bricks for the houses we all live. The electricity we use. The cars we drive. Our water consumption. The clothes we use. Our electronics. Literally even the fruit & veg that's produced for world consumption is harmful to the environment.

Don't let the internet fool you into feeling bad because of consuming meat. No vegan is giving up all of the other stuff that's literally destroying the planet.

Tbf it's a scientific fact that eating meat, or rather raising thousands of animals, is one of the biggest contributors to accelerating climate change, it's not really up for debate.

The other is plane travel.

The rest is micro consumerism bullsh!t in comparison.

I'm a big fan of soups too.

Dutch Mustard soup is the bomb.

What the hell is Dutch mustard soup?

Colour me intrigued.

Seconded. What is that? I like all mustards.

The recipe I use:

They have regional variations, with different toppings like shrimp etc.

I found the opposite, the less meat I eat, the less I like it.

Can't eat roast beef, burgers or sausages anymore, but the vegetarian alternatives are better (if you go for the right brands)

The Flexitarian version of the whopper is miles better, agreed with by my brother who's a typical angry "no I won't give up meat" small minded idiot

Actually I think you massively miss the point.

80% of the land used for agriculture globally is for meat production/meat feeds

Cows need 10g of plant protein for every 1g of meat they put on, if everyone had meat just 2x a week we could stop using 50% of the land we currently use for agriculture and instead use it for other purposes, such as carbon capture through reforestation, which would of course then take care of most of the other issues.

You also shouldn't broadbrush people in such a way, I'm not a vegan, but I've given up plenty of things aside from meat, and know plenty of others who do too, it's not a case of you should either live a ridiculously austere life or you might as well produce as much carbon as humanly possible, we can all afford a budget of 5tonnes of CO2e a year to live sustainable lives on the planet, and should aim to do so, that will still allow you to drive cars, have clothes and even the occasional holiday.

I don't eat pork at all now as a rule but I did have bacon for the first time in three years at the weekend. My god that shizzle is nice. Won't be having it again for probably another three years though.

Which brands you going for insert?

Cauldron sausages are good. I don't mind quorn pieces, in fact like them, but find the fillet very meh. I could do with some more choices really.

Thing is I am hungry again in about an hour.

Pigs are actually the most efficient protein converters we eat, 3g of plant protein for every 1g of meat

I really love Vivera products, their bacon when you get the cooking right is crispy deliciousness. When you consider the sources of the flavour on bacon are salt and smoke you just need to replicate the texture and vivera do it very very well.

All the Vivera stuff is decent, as is "The vegetarian butcher" they make the plant based whopper patty..

Viveras schwarma is amazing, vegetarian butchers "what the cluck" is a great alternative to chicken thighs (best browned then cooked in a sauce) their "Little Willie's" sausages are too realistic for my vegetarian girlfriend to eat

It's really all about the texture with these products and those two companies do it best

Out of sheer interest how much plant protein does a human have to consume to match meat protein?

May be a dumb question I'm not entirely sure how this stuff works.

Bio-availability is the keyword you would use to do research on it

There's also an element of amino acid profiles that come in to it.

Beefs bioavailability is 0.92, whereas soy the most common beef feedstock is 0.91 (both numbers for humans)

You can feed 10g of plant protein to a cow to make 1g of beef protein for which the human will end up with 0.92g of bio available protein.

Or you can feed 10g of soy protein to the human and they end up with 9.1g of bioavailable protein.

Which would of course be silly amounts of food on your plate, so you eat 1g of the plant protein as a direct replacement and instead stop farming the other 9g soy.

So we stop cutting down the rainforest, produce more natural and tasty grass fed beef and reforest more areas to capture carbon and offset things like car travel
