Mac Grav
Salah Wirtz Szob
Alvarez?!

I don’t think so personally, and I’m not even convinced we’re in for him. Too many doubts about him playing in this league imo, and I can’t see him leaving Spain after one season, and a decent one at that.

Wirtz has told Leverkusen he only wants us, according to Fab. Contract agreed
Reina sent off in the first half his last match before retiring.
McCoist was asked if he thought the fee for Wirtz was too high….
And he said: “Yes, for anybody it is - that’s my argument. Is he a good player? Yes. Is he a top player? Yes, but straight away if you can get three players at £40m or maybe an £80m and a £40m. Yes, is the answer to the question.
“I think that money could be better spent, I really do.
“Yes, I like him as a player and he’ll make a difference in any side but it’s too much for me, it really is too much.
——————————
As a person, I really like McCoist, he’d be a great laugh down the local. But when it comes to football, he’s a bit of a simpleton. It’s the same when he’s commentating, I’m left scratching my head sometimes, thinking ‘what the feck are you going on about’.
And wasn’t it McCoist that said we should go for Kane?
The thing is he's sort of right in a general way. But the whole 80m and 40m player instead thing is often wrong. We've got a top team as shown by winning the league and topping the CL group (would have probably beat most teams other than PSG) so we just need to boost quality and only top top players will do that really. And he's so young that if he ends up doing 10 years here then the fee will seem absolutely fine.
No holding back from Klopp.

I don’t think he is right though, as in the situation we’re in, I don’t think the money could be better spent. With the general way we play, having that player who can play the key pass and unlock the low block defences is crucial. I read an overview of him, and the range of positions he can play to a high level makes his fee more reasonable in a value for money sense imo.

Tbh, if anyone outside the current team had an influence I’d say it was likely to be Xabi Alonso. He still speaks incredibly highly of us and being his manager, might have influenced Wirtz’s thinking.

Oh no doubt, I mean in general the idea that teams are spending £120m on a single player is just a bit mad really. But that is the world we are operating in so it's what you have to do to get the very best players. I'm just glad we only tend to do it when it looks like we have the absolute best available (Alison VVD). Nunez a high fee but still the bracket below the top prices when we actually bought him and shows what can happen when you fork out without as close to a guarantee of success as possible. Think even rival fans would mostly admit Wirtz looks as close to a sure thing as is available right now - obviously would've been more willing to admit that if he went with Bayern
Bellingham going to Madrid likely paved the way for Wirtz to sign for us over Madrid. If Bellingham wasn’t at Madrid I reckon he’d be following Alonso there.
That said, until he’s holding a shirt up, I still don’t expect the deal to come off.

Interesting hypothetical that. Get Bellingham and real get Wirtz or keep with the status quo. Id probably still go Bellingham but not loads in it and given our current team probably Wirtz fits better.
I posted about this a week or so ago - McCoist probably would have been right 7 or 8 years ago. When we sold Coutinho you could spend £40m, £50m, £60m and get excellent players.
We’re still looking to spend Coutinho’esk money but the mid-range of the transfer market has gone up significantly. What you can buy for £40m today would have been £20m 5 or 6 years ago. There’s not as much value there imo. Or if there is it’s usually because of a release clause (eg AMA).

No it’s a stupid comment. He’s not just a Real Madrid player is he? He’s a Real Madrid player from next season, who’s currently a Liverpool player who was on the field looking to help the team get a win, who spent twenty years at the club and helped the club win big trophies.

I can imagine Leverkusen don’t want to go down the Dortmund route of losing their best players to Bayern tbh. Maybe German clubs are getting sick of the monopoly.
