On the verdict they were saying lyth and ballance should be dropped. Hale's to open and bell to move up to 3! Michael Vaughan mentioned this on the channel 5 highlights. Not sure a move from 4 to 3 is wise when so badly out of form.
We need to pick a double headed coin...and get the toss call...far more important
move bell up.....no chance....move him oout is the better option right now.

I think picking bairstow either as a specialist batsman or instead of buttler for the next test is a no brainer. At the very least move root to 3 and bairstow 4 bell 5 if they want to keep changes to a minimum.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Bairstow will get out to one of the quick bowlers playing across the line, like he does every time he plays test cricket. He gets bowled far too often to be a top order batsman at test level (over a quarter of his test dismissals have been bowled).
He is a good county player however, his technique means he is found wanting at test level. There is a reason why he has only averaged 26.95 in 24 innings.
Still think KP should be re-introduced to the England fold.
That 1 player improves the team by some margin.

Maybe so, but Bell keeps getting out either playing across the line or wafting stupidly, both of which are equally bad technical issues.
At least Bairstow is in red-hot form (albeit only at county level) and is showing signs of having dramatically improved in the last year or so. NZ's top-class international attack didn't seem to phase him earlier in the summer...
I'd like to see Bairstow and Rashid come in although I think only the former will feature, and probably at the expense of Ballance rather than Bell. Bell needs to go. There's plenty of combinations we could use with the flexibility afforded by Moeen being at 8 - he could move up to 6 to allow room for Rashid at 8, or he could stay down at 8 and allow Bairstow in at 6 with Stokes and Root moving up one.
James Taylor is currently 176* - not been in great form but that's a serious knock, he can't do any worse than Bell even if I don't rate him as a truly Test-standard bat

My opinion on Bairstow has nothing to do with Bell. Why replace someone who is out of form for someone who is technically flawed?
I would much rather play someone like James Taylor than someone who has proven to be not good enough.
I wouldn't drop Buttler either. Young players like him need a run in the team.
I don't think it matters who plays. It upsets me to say it, but I don't think English and Welsh players have the "bottle".
A big generalisation, I know but I've seen it so many times over the years. I predicted what would happen in this test as soon as Australia got to about 200/1 on day 1. I take no delight in being right.
Other than very few exceptions, English players lose their "bottle" when the going gets tough.
When was the last time that you saw an English player really grind-out an innings to save a match? Atherton against South Africa, 20 plus years ago?
Stokes tried to avoid being hit by the ball. Cook did the same a few years ago.
Bell generally makes "easy" runs. When the pressure is on, he gives his wicket away.
Broad is now frightened of the rising ball.
Etc...
I just can't see England having the ballls to come back from this defeat the way the Aussies did after Cardiff. 4-1.
God, I feel sick!

SPOT ON......NO WAY ENGLAND WILL HAVE THE MINERALS TO RECOVER FROM THAT MAULING.
The first test was a red herring...
the next 3 will be a truer indication of things... 4-1
maybe 3-1 if weather helps us out.
England fans are probably the worst for knee-jerk reactions. No way will this finish 4-1 for goodness sake! England were woeful ok, and can't get worse whilst the Aussies were at their very best and can't get any better.... Expect both to find that medium.
The sooner England realise that putting a bit of green on the wicket is the way forward the better. The lords test was lost due to management decisions in the main. Played right into the Aussie hands

Spot on lefty...sadly there's no way the selectors and straussy in particular are going near that slice of humble pie
knee jerk.....i said 3-1 aust before a ball had been bowled.
I also said we would collapse in this test and that it would be 3-1 before we started....
but thank you for assuming you know what england fans think about it all.....
I think Bairstow should come, he is in red hot form and has gone away and made a few subtle changes to his technique and is reaping the rewards at county level, what more does he have to do to earn a place in the team.
He could even replace Buttler, his glove work is just as good if not better and he is in form with the bat, there is no harm in letting one or two know that if they do not perform they will be dropped.
Taylor has had a poor season up to today`s large score, Bairstow has been consistent all season. Bairstow did have a technical issue with playing across the line, but he has gone away and worked on things, and has dramatically improved as a result, he deserves a few more chances.
Bell for example has only really troubled the scorers once in something like his last dozen knocks, you can not keep picking people who do not score runs. (though with England management it is no surprise)
Thought about it and decided out are lyth, ballance, bell, butler. In hales, taylor, bairstow, rashid.
Cook, hales, root, taylor, stokes, bairstow, ali, rashid, broad, wood, anderson.
Doubt they wld change out 4 at once Benny.

Agree for the most part...
Cook
Hales
Root
Taylor
Stokes
Bairstow
Buttler
Broad
Wood
Footit
Anderson
Time to ditch as many of the the left handers as possible. Footitt also comes into a 5 man pace attack as he's more likely to win us a game than Moeen is.
I think Bairstow will be in, and I think it'll be for Ballance. I don't see any other changes happening. Bell should be first out the door but he'll be retained.
Lyth will get a few more chances, which he should given the volume of runs he scored last season - same reason Bairstow is (rightly) being considered.
Cook
?
Root
Stokes
Bell
?
Buttler?
Moeen
Broad
Wood
Anderson
I don't think you have to make so many changes. Perhaps even Balance could stay in the team? What about giving Lyth another match?
What about resting one of the bowlers (Anderson?), producing a turning wicket and putting Rashid in?
If Bairstow has worked on his technique then he deserves another chance. I don't watch much county cricket, so I am not in the know on whether he has or not.
I would drop Ballance for the next test. He has done brilliantly until recently at number 3 in the test matches since coming into the team. However, I think he is too compact and doesn't get forward enough meaning he doesn't get his head over the ball. I think (much like Alastair Cook at the start of his England career) teams have sussed out his technical flaws after his honeymoon period and with him facing fast left arm bowlers for the first time and being low on confidence after the World Cup, he is struggling. He needs to go away and score runs of Yorkshire whilst working on some aspects of this game. If he does that, I think he will come back a better player and be an England batsmen for a long time.
I would keep Bell in the team for the next test, with it being at Edgbaston, his home ground. He is the best English batsmen in terms of technique and most experienced in the middle order, however is in woeful form. I would move him to number 3 and tell him he needs to shoulder the responsibility in the next test. I think if he fails then, he will need to be dropped. At 34 years old, that could spell the end for him though at international level, which would be a shame as he is a talented player who, when in form, is brilliant to watch.
Bringing Bairstow in at five I think would put pressure on Buttler too, being a batsmen in who can also keep wicket. I think Buttler has a great future for England, so I wouldn't drop him just yet, but having someone like Bairstow around the England camp give us the option of letting him go back to his county to score some runs if needed.
I would keep the bowling attack the same for the next test and hope for a wicket that is a bit quicker and gives the bowlers more assistance. However, we need to be able to take 20 wickets in a game to win, so if Australia bat like they did at Lords in the next test, I think we need to start looking at players like Rashid or possibly even Steven Finn. Whilst those two might not be as consistent as our current bowlers, I think they would be more penetrative and perhaps we would need to go with a more aggressive results. Are there any other bowlers out there that would do this?
Likely line up:
Cook
Lyth
Root
Bell
Bairstow
Moeen
Buttler
Broad
Wood
Anderson
