I keep asking this question but no one wants to answer it.
What is the spirit behind these regulations? What is the EU trying to achieve with them?
----------------------------------------------------------------------
well why don't you tell us instead.
though i suspect the answer is that they have the welfare of the european people at heart, and they're doing all of this for our benefit, but we're just too stupid to see it.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
The spirit behind the vast majority of legislation is the protection of life and the environment.
Without them, I would not recommend you drank tap water
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Did we not drink tap water before 1973?
Fair enough, my concern remains is what will stop a lot of these industries being privatised fully at the expense of the British worker when tory policies privatise everything?
We have seen that happen with the steel industry for instance where

BTW, I am still waiting for you to answer to this question.
What did you actually mean when you said "the working time directive should never have been introduced"?
You were quick enough to offer a sarcastic comment about having Victorian values when I pulled you up on it but you haven't actually answered the question.

There are hundreds of reasons why life expectancy was as it was then, and why it has increased with time. Tap water is not the only one.

oh, and given that it will take 2 years + for us to exit the EU then the period of us with a tory government outside the EU will barely last months.
as for the WTD, it wasn't necessary, when it was introduced over 90% of UK employees already enjoyed annual leave greater than the levels mandated - in the same way that the UK government then introduced domestic legislation that gave allowances that exceeded the European levels - and it has brought no real benefits to the economy or to the labour force (but it has brought a hell of a lot of regulatory costs). In fact one of the major effects has been to take what used to be one job and to split it amongst two people, giving both employees half a job.
Frankly if an employer and employee want to agree that the employee should regularly work more than 48 hours a week, that's fine with me. At c.15% of UK companies every employee opts out of it entirely, which they would have been free to do without the legislation, and are free to do now, but it costs them the regulatory burden to do so.
