We do with a lot of tariffs imposed to protect smaller countries in the EU. Its a completely different ball game when the only country to worry about is Britain.
...................................
Yeah we can finally sort out that steel problem with China for example that the EU was holding us back with.....
----------------------------------------------------------------------
It will be a start. It will take 12 months minimum because of the legal implications of state aid, so lets hope Tata reassess their sale and keep the business open till then. Its likely to be worth much more if Tata Steel are given preference on railways and other infrastructure projects. I am sure their strategists are doing their due diligence right now.

What are you talking about? The reason why Tata are pulling out is because of China steel dumping in the EU. That prices the steel produced in Britain out of the market because the specific type of furnaces used in steel production in the UK are not as cost effective. There is also a very large pensions bill. The steel being dumped in the EU is below cost. However the EU cannot raise specific tariffs on Chinese steel because lets face it, car production in Germany enjoys cheap steel. It not only hurts steel production in UK but all through Europe. Now Europe have very strict laws against state aid so none of the countries in the EU with steel production can do anything about it. Just ask Arcelor on jobs being threatened across the EU.
The best that could be done was help on the pensions in UK so allowing Tata to sell. Thats stopped because of the obvious uncertainty involved in commercial property. However it will take at least 2 years to pull of the ECJ. So Tata are in limbo. They would like to sell up immediately as its costing them. However if they tough it they need to be sure that Britain will pull out and implement anti-dumping duties on China in any trade deal.
But don't take my word for it read.

Jenius, the reason your post, and that part in particular got so much derision is that the EU had a massive tariff ready to apply to Chinese steel but the UK government vetoed that decision.
This was partly due to the Chinese willingness to invest in the new Nuclear power plants.
So it wasn't due to German car manufacturing, it was down to British government sovereign decision to feck their own steel plants.
You need to understand that.

Which countries do we buy most of our steel from?
Clue 1: China is 3rd
Clue 2: The top 2 would have made a cracking final on Sunday

I'd like to take at least some of the credit for setting him down that path...
Britain was one of 14 countries that blocked the removal of the lesser duty rule that includes GERMANY, ITALY and FRANCE.
But you only blame Britain. I just have to wonder why your hatred of Britain clouds your judgement so much.
(let me exclude France from that. my fault, I couldn't remember the exact countries of the top of my head).

Costs £20+ to boil a kettle at a steel plant at peak time. Sad state of affairs.

Issue flasks. Problem solved

However the EU cannot raise specific tariffs on Chinese steel because lets face it, car production in Germany enjoys cheap steel. It not only hurts steel production in UK but all through Europe.

The mind boggles mate, it really boggles.
