Ever since France ended its Arab Policy in 2003 its leverage in the Middle East and Arab Africa has waned quite a lot. However France was the still the first western country to visit Lebanon after Israel attacked providing aid money and evacuation instructions, but mainly because there are still over 20000+ French nationals living in around Beruit (mainly christians) and issued them with information to leave known vulnerable areas to attacks. Macron has still fallen short of condemning Israeli Gvt though, (in line with Americas other allies) and demanding retraint. France's influenece in Lebabon is over really.

Anyone think it’s got something to do with their foreign policies?

It hasn’t been reported heavily in the UK from what I’ve seen, but they haven’t been all that quiet.

Macron has been on the phone to Netanyahu telling him to de-escalate, and he’s also given a televised statement stood in front of the French and Lebanese flags; 88 (? something like that) Francophone countries have banded together to issue a joint statement demanding an immediate ceasefire; and the French representative to the UN has given a statement to the GA opening with, “…there must be no war in Lebanon. We strongly call upon Israel to stop the escalation underway in Lebanon, and upon Hezbollah to cease strikes against Israel,” and going on to say that all strikes on Beirut, “must stop immediately.”

They’ve also strongly condemned yesterday’s attacks on UN peacekeepers and summoned the Israeli ambassador.

I wouldn’t trust the UK media to report comprehensively or in an unbiased fashion on the positions of other nations’ governments wrt what is going on in the ME right now. And that includes the BBC.

If you want to know where any given one stands, you’re better off hunting for direct addresses, statements and press conferences by government leaders or ambassadors.

Despite being a longtime student of Adorno, Horkheimer and Chomsky, I’ve defended the BBC against attacks from the left as well as right on countless occasions over the years. I still value its output, and *relatively-speaking* (heavy qualification there) its independence, impartiality and quality in terms of journalistic output.

But the editorial shaping of its reporting on the Ukraine-Russia conflict (particularly) over the last 30 months and Israel’s various exploits over the last year have been straight up propaganda exercises.

Where to start?

Probably with a world of “us vs them” narrative building. Read any two BBC articles about Ukrainian and then Russian soldiers, and note down the adjectives used to describe the Ukrainian conscripts (“brave”, “heroic”, “determined”, etc.) and Russian conscripts (“brutal”, “cruel”, “fooled”, “looters”, etc.). This is a constant and clear pattern.

There have been more heartstring tugging stories about the impact on Ukrainian civilian lives of the Russian invasion than I’ve seen on any other conflict historically.

There’s been zero mention of corruption in Zelensky’s administration, zero time given to voices of dissent within Ukraine, and next to no coverage of restrictions on freedoms in Ukraine.

There’s been zero platform for any discussion about the political dismissal of peace talks.

There has been (as far as I have seen) absolutely zero coverage of potential war crimes by the Ukrainian military.

It’s everywhere in the edits, and we’ve seen the same, predictably, across Europe.

(Before the sledging starts, and I shouldn’t have to facking do this, but here we are: Putin is a brutal autocrat; the invasion was and is illegal, brutal and unjustifiable; sanctions haven’t gone far enough; and Ukraine is both entitled to and entitled to defend its eastern territories.)

and next to no coverage of restrictions on freedoms in Ukraine.

Example:

How much BBC coverage have you seen about concerns and complaints made by *Western based* human rights organisations about rights violations in Ukraine since the Russian invasion?

How much BBC coverage have you seen about the same in Russia?
