Is Rashford a Problem?

Not yet. Greenwood does not really look convincing, but the only way for him to get that is to play.

Rashford is just going through a bad patch.

There was a debate once where people thought Rashford was better than Mbappe because he played in a farmer's league...

Yes, but those of us with a modicum of intelligence shot that one down..

You would expect £50+ million Fred to look good against Astana.

I don't think its just Rashford going through a bad patch, it's just his decision-making is not that great. He has all the attributes otherwise.

Greenwood will get more confident with game time, his goal was well taken. Rashford has been in a mini-slump since the PSG game

When they were both breaking into the scene, it was hard to call, but now, it's just too clear...

Rashford has gone into himself a bit. For me he's at his best when going at players. He's got such good balance and can go either way but the pressure he is under must be insane. He's now on a huge contract and arguable Man Utds number one striker.

Pretty sure I remember reading a quote from Fergie along the lines of decision making is the last thing a young player learns. Believe he was referring to a young Ronaldo at the time when he was being criticised for holding the ball too long.

Give the lad a bit of time, it’ll come.

I don’t think Rashford is a problem as such, not having a world class striker as well as him is.

In answer to the OPs question, yes and no. He's bags of talent, a good attitude, but I don't know his best position.

posted on 20/9/19

He just doesn't play intelligently, something which should have come on by now.

That being said, he has the tools and in the right situation he can be devastating. Wish we could afford to bench him. Sadly we can't so improvement needs to come from stronger instruction from ole on his choices when it comes to dribbling into blind alleys, carelessness with the ball.

By the end of the season, we will have a good idea of who he is. Might end up being a poor man's vardy

There was a moment towards the end of the game that sort of summed him up at the moment; he was running down the left flank on a counter attack and he Mata screaming for the ball in space inside of him. He didn't even see Mata. Just ran head down up the pitch, into trouble and lost the ball.

I think like a couple of our players he's having a bit of an identity crisis in that he doesn't yet know what he is supposed to be as a player. To me Rashford looked so good when he burst onto to scene because he would run at players but then look to move the ball on and get moving himself. He's now holding it too long himself, trying to do far too much, over complicating things and making really poor choices.

He needs to get back to the more humble style of play that made his dangerous and effective as a teenager.

He's absolutely poverty and has been for ages. A bad patch shouldn't last year's. He doesn't seem like he has made any progress over the last few years.

A club as big as United should never be going into a season with a 21 year old as our senior striking option. He is talented but players that young are inconsistent and it probably doesn’t help that the pressure falls upon his shoulders.

As Melton said, we need a top striker there to take the burden off him and allow him to develop naturally rather than have every mistake magnified as by proxy he’s our main guy rather than a prospect.

Plus he has no real competition - that in itself can lead to complacency.

Very good point, needs more competition from an established world class striker, someone he could learn from as well

Other than put the ball in the net, what did he do wrong last night?

All of his chances hit the target, his movement and awareness was there to even get on the end of those chances too.

His free kick was close, his volleys didn't end up in row z. The only one you can criticise in isolation would be the one in the 6 yard box, should have scored but again, he hit the target.

My worry with Rashford is his ego, sometimes he walks around like he thinks he's Cantona and tries things even Ronaldo couldn't pull off.

Let's not forget he is 21 and it yet to find his way. I think he is best from the left, but he needs to improve his output. If he can improve his decision making and finishing, he will be a very good PL player.

Summed it up perfectly, he really does have all the tools to be a great player, but he has over 150 games under his belt, that experience should have helped with his decision making and so on. Again still only 21 but a vast amount of experience.

Maybe I should have said we shouldn’t have gone into a season with two young strikers who even now we don’t know whether they’re better from the left or in the middle - and imo that is the same with Greenwood

Would have been more accurate, and I'm sure most agree.

Unsure who we should have signed though, hopefully Martial can stay fit as he has produced on both goals and performances up top so far this season.

Mandzukic would have been ideal. Experienced, offers something in the air from crosses, works hard and wouldn't expect to start every game.

Even Llorente on a free as a backup option mightn't have been bad business to fill out the squad.

posted on 20/9/19

No, he isn’t.

He had three good attempts on target yesterday, two of which were kept out by excellent saves.

His movement was good, some of his link up play was good, and he played like an actual centreforward finding gaps between their CBs and playing off the shoulder with late runs from the edge of the box.

On another day, he scores two or three and everybody is saying the decision to play him through the middle is vindicated and he’s back.

posted on 20/9/19

I think Llorente is a great shout. Already scored for Napoli and was fairly important for Spurs in their CL run.

Shame we missed him. I wonder how likely it would be to get someone like Cavani in Jan. he turns 33 next year but is surely gonna leave PSG with Icardi there.

Probably wouldn’t join us but if it looked like we were heading back to the CL and we offered him a decent wage he may come. People will lazily call him another Sanchez but he’s still banging them in and would be a perfect mentor for the likes of Rash and Greenwood
