That Chelsea team was pretty shiiiiiit, to be fair. They had a lot of big names but their performances didn’t meet the standard they’d shown in their prime.

It’s like saying Moyes’ United were good because we had Evra, Vidic, Rio, Rooney, RVP and Carrick.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

I still think that side would have beaten us though. At worst, I don’t think they were ‘far’ worse as the Process has said. They had a character that I just don’t see in us (yet). Luck is one thing but going to the Nou Camp and down to 10 men to one of the greatest sides ever and still qualifying was one of the most impressive things I’ve seen.

What worse sides than us have won the CL? And that’s not even me being negative to Ole.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Liverpool in 05 and Chelsea 2012 were far worse than our current side.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

😹 how can you quantify that statement though? Chelsea had Lampard, Terry, Drogba, Ballack, Mata, Cech, Cole etc. Just because the way they won the CL in such a crazy way doesn’t mean they were worse than us.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
They came 6th in the league that season. Most of those players were well past their best at that stage.

If there was ever a name on the trophy example that was it. They lucked it simple as.

If Messi’s penalty was inches lower they’d have lost by 3 or 4. Every thing went for them.

If Terry didn’t slip we’d have lost the CL final in 2008. Every side has some luck along the way. Yes, Chelsea had more than most but you do them a disservice when looking at their route to the trophy. Played really well at times and like I said above, showed a character we don’t seem to have yet.

They probably we would, we lose to a lot of shiiiiit teams.

That game of the Nou Camp was one of the most ridiculous things I’ve ever seen. They had luck that I don’t see in any team to have played in the CL. It was actually mental.

As I mentioned above, I wouldn’t use it as a reference point as it’s like talking about Leicester. You’ll never see a team play as bad throughout a CL campaign and win it again.

In terms of this CL, yes it’s a cup competition and of course nothing is impossible but I’d put these sides ahead of us in terms of quality (in no order)

Bayern
Liverpool
City
Sevilla
Barca
Dortmund
Leipzig
PSG
Juventus

And think Atalanta, Chelsea and Inter would be very dangerous too. Not sure about Real or Atletico.

posted on 21/10/20

United haven't shown any real cup winning ability under Ole have they? It's get a great result against PSG then fluff the next game.

There's a chance they could win it, no different to any other side in the competition. Just like mathematically any side can win the PL until it's literally impossible but that's hardly worth writing an article about

Looking at that list right now it’s only Bayern that would surprise me if they were knocked out in the last 16. That will likely change by the last 16 when we have a better idea of the level these teams are at, but I think many of them have issues that make them beatable for quite a lot of teams.

Well I honestly wasn’t celebrating being back in the C.L.
I was happy for the Lads and Ole for getting 3rd, after an incredible run of games after lockdown, but we weren’t thinking of C.L.
So going into the season, sure, I’m of the mind, we are just making up the numbers, so enjoy it, learn from it.
And I’ll do the same without putting pressure on them.
They’ll obviously want to go far as possible, and who knows which teams door Lady Luck will knock.
for me closing the gap on Liverpool/City is priority imo.

What is all the negativity about. Cracking result from a difficult fixture when most fans were probably thinking the away draw would be good enough. They didn't try to just defend a draw result. Fans should be proud, not nitpicking. Unless there is a mad gunman massacre at their training ground, non of the top teams in europe field a weakened side, unless that means they had to include a second string £9M player.

Chelsea had luck but you're completely ignoring the big game experience that team had, which was huge, and the sheer desire of those players that had tried and failed to win the champions league for almost a decade to get over the line and win it that year. You can't compare that to this United team who have no big game experience that comes from playing Champions league quarter finals/semi finals and finals for almost a decade.

But I’m not using Chelsea as an argument for why we could win it. I don’t expect a team that bad to ever win the CL again, so it’s irrelevant to me.

Look United are not that good. That Liverpool team had Steven Gerrard singlehandedly winning them games at his best and Drogba that year in the CL was an absolute animal. Who do United have? Pogba? I just think there's no way you guys could replicate what those teams did. You don't have players who will win big games against top teams like us and Liverpool did.

Liverpool got 60 points in the league 03/04
United got 66 points last season
Alonso, Gerrard, Hypia and Carra is all that would get into our current team so yeah you’re wrong.

posted on 21/10/20

No, we probably don’t.

But I wouldn’t bet against us getting into the later stages fairly comfortably (the seeding system certainly helps make it easy for big clubs to escape the groups, though it dosent always happen). When we get at it, in ole’s seemingly preferred big game line up, we can give anyone a game.
