There’s no need for further restrictions in Scotland.

Absolute nonsense.

The Herald is claiming - 'Nicola Sturgeon may have to bring bring in tougher Lockdown restrictions'.

We now live in a country where the police can enter your house without a warrant to check who is there and why; can stop you anywhere you are and ask the purpose of you being out of the house and fine you if you don’t give a reasonable excuse.

Laws imposed on who we mix with and every aspect of your private life controlled overnight without the need for interrogation or any cautionary questioning.

Being denied data that is supposedly used to pass these laws other than death rates and infection rates with zero information on the “other costs”.

The notion that the health bodies are there to protect us and should be financed and built to do so now changed 180 to the public protecting the health bodies.

2021 this is.

Or people could just follow the guidelines instead of hoping for some sort of half measure that achieves nothing.

The failures of last year surely have been learned by now?

Hmmmm

With very few exceptions in the population, practically everyone is obeying the rules.

How about considering that the lockdowns just don’t work and look at counties with far harsher restrictions suffering from worsening figures?

Aye would be better if all over 65 and those at high risk shielded. Then back to tier 2 half measures for the rest of us.

Give people a choice, you know free will and that.

Incompetence and selfish people have caused the situation

Thanks.

Glad you’ve found the reason for all these countries deaths and illnesses.

Just house arrest all the selfish people.

Of course the lockdown worked on the initial virus. Now virus boy has got sneaky and can get you more easily. That's the bottom line - even if everyone did as asked the wee bu99er decided to retaliate. And it might mutate again to be even more infectious such that we have to close house vents and not even walk past someone.

All we can do is reduce the occurrences and hope for the best until vaccine hopefully works or we find an effective treatment. The theory is, I believe, it tries to mutate to increase that infectiousness but in doing so reduces in seriousness. Virus evolution 101?

Did the first lockdown really work though? There was minimal testing then, and I know of many people including myself that reckon had the virus, mild so as not to require any treatment, but would now be easily classed as another statistic.

Lockdown, if properly implemented and adhered to, quite evidently works at suppressing the spread of the virus. Remember folk are still flying into the country without needing a negative test, without quarantining, without effective track and tracing.

Is there any actual evidence the virus is more sneaky, or was the sudden rise in South east due to the total lack of restrictions....

Was good news that there was a new effective treatment today hopefully takes pressure off the nhs. Not sure on virus mutations but all viruses mutate anyway. It’s going to come back every year.

Not necessarily. It depends how it mutated. The UK variant has 17 small mutations (I think) but the main mutation that the UK variant has seen to make it more infectious is in the spike protein, which is what attaches it to the host cell and therefore wouldn't impact seriousness. The variant in South Africa has seen a very similar mutation in the spike protein to make it more infectious, despite being completely separate (I think that variant has only seen 3 mutations).

In terms of seriousness, if a virus kills its host too quickly then it doesn't spread. At the moment, Covid probably has a perfect balance. From listening to experts, the key thing is that not of the mutations we have seen are expected to impact the effectiveness of the vaccine (the mutations were seen before the vaccine was issued, so shouldn't have been influenced by it). This probably tells us though that Covid isnt going to just go away and that vaccinations could become a regular thing.

I believe that is correct as a virus becomes more contagious it becomes less of a risk, basically killing off your host is not a good way to survive and spread.

Though I don't believe there much data about the new strain yet.

I am resigned to be dealing with restrictions for the next few years.

The next few years? 😂😂
