Headline 'Australia was the envy of the world, now it's a shambolic mess'
Just Google Australia covid and it's not far down.

That’s more about how the decision has been made to treat Omicron less like a serious variant and more one that the vaccines can handle. It’s risky and there’s a good argument for not doing it but we’ve got one of the best vaccine turnouts in the world so hopefully that works and there’s a mix of vaccine and herd immunity that brings the pandemic to an end

Covid-related deaths per million inhabitants:

UK 2,182
Aus 90

There's obviously loads of factors involved in Covid-related deaths, but the extreme measures taken in some countries do seem to have made a big impact.

The question is at which point is the loss of freedom worth it.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
And those UK numbers are inflated by anyone WITH covid at time of death.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

πŸ™„
----------------------------------------------------------------------
He's right though, Robb. Loads of different ways of registering the deaths, and many countries do actually list any death of a patient infected with Covid as a Covid death.

This past week, the hospital where my partner works had around 150 or 160 hospitalised patients with Covid, but only around 25 of them were in hospital for Covid.

I'm not a denier in any shape or form, but not every antivaxxer is a nutjob, and not everything they say rubbish. A lot of it deffo is, just not all.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Folk catching COVID in hospital is huge too.

The death certificate has to include Covid as part of the chain of events for it to be a Covid counted death. It’s a fallacy to say that (for example) - someone who dies in a bus crash is classed as a Covid death. The best way to see how the figures aren’t fudged are the massively inflated year on year deaths.

In the US for example they had a rise of 500k over their yearly average in 2020. Same in the UK (by something like 80-90K)
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Yes, what I've heard too is that excess deaths is the closest way of establishing the real impact. But as I said, different countries have different procedures. As well as there being myriad other factors involved.

Bloody good!!
Respect to the Aussies for putting health before sport

UEFA and the PL ought to do the same with footballers. Not vaxed? registration gets rescinded and you’re not permitted to play
----------------------------------------------------------------------
I hate this type of view.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
What's wrong with it?
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Making the vaccine essentially mandatory for young healthy people when everyone who wants the vaccine has it by now.

That’s wrong imo.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
The vaccine is not 100% effective. And healthy young people can catch it and pass it on to the 10% not covered.

I can’t speak for Melbourne but I was in England during the first lockdown in 2020 and I’ve never once in Sydney felt as badly ‘locked down’ as I was in England. So the stories of a lack of freedom are overblown.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

I can't say either. I do know that China's made the most of the situation to tighten its grip even further on Hong Kong, although that was already a work in progress. Upon her return there in September, my sister had to do 3 full weeks of quarantine in a hotel paid out of her own pocket, with 9 compulsory PCR tests until she was allowed home.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

I had to stay in accommodation out of my own pocket too for 14 days and be tested 3 times during the stay and make my own way down to Sydney. Didn’t mind it tbh, finally read the Dead Zone by Stephen King and just chilled. There are some people (like Russell Brand ) trying to call these places concentration camps 🧐

You seem very vital for a guy who’s been around 5 times as long as Chelsea have existed so once Covid is done come on down and bring the family. A nice Sydney harbour cruise with a glass of Jacobs’s Creek will do nicely πŸ‘

My lad was in hotel quarantine for 10 days. Took a football in with him and practiced at all hours. Drove the building mad. Said what you gonna do about it, chuck me out?

Australia, and New Zealand, have long had strict rules on Immigration and imports of goods. This is to protect their populations and unique flora and fauna. Having no land borders with any other countries they are able to do this and have responsibly tried to do so. That is the main purpose of their Border Control. The subsequent delays at immigration/customs can be a pain but well worth it to enjoy those beautiful countries as a visitor.
I have no sympathy with Djokovic as he would obviously have been aware of the rules but apparently thought his sporting status would bypass them, instead of going through the correct procedures.
Advance Australia Fair!

Yeah, definitely needed to kick him out because the protected need to be protected from the unprotected who didn’t get to the protection that didn't protect the protected.

Yeah, that makes sense.

Maybe but Australia are not unique in that.

As an aside, one of the saddest aspects of the whole covid sh.t show is the xenophobia and sledgehammer immigration policies that fckd a lot of people up more than was needed.

No. If you endorse an authoritative policy where people aren’t allowed to move on with their lives and willing to ostracize people who aren’t vaccinated, then you’re probably related to a baboon’s ass.

The annoying thing with this is it’ll end up being about the mess between state and federal politics in Australia rather than just Djokovic is an antivaxxer that has had some very dubious views about other subjects over the years too.
