I'm not dissing Valverde really, but I suspect Tomkins is in a group of one having him ahead of Salah regardless.
I'd say Messi is still top 5 personally - 12 goals and 14 assists in 19 games.
If that were anyone else everyone would be going mental, it's only cause it's still below his peak that we're not.
Valverde a fair shout if you watch him play - really watch him. As always with these list things we are seduced by goals scored or outrageous assists. I like to see the defenders, workhorses and all rounders get a look in.
Valverde is Avington a great season so far for sure but 5 months good form doesn't put him in the top five best players in the world for me.
Out of that list only Mbappe is having a good world cup from the players who qualified. My list would be:
1) Mbappe
2) Messi
3) Haaland
4) Alisson
5) KDB
I thought about having Alisson in. An exceptional keeper, arguably the best keeper in the world and it's not a very hard argument to win either.

More accomplished technically, but Vini's output is far higher for now.
Vini isn't a top 5 player though. I don't think I could name an elite player present or past who uses the ball less efficiently than him. He might be able to get there one day, but he won't if he continues to be as wasteful as he is.
