I went for walk of approx 6-7 miles along the river thames path into the centre of Oxford and back yesterday. I had jeans and a hoodie on so no running but will definitely do this again in more appropriate gear and break into the odd run along the way.

sounds lovely

It was. Unfortunately only spent 10 minutes or so in Oxford because of the time. Had to take the hoodie off after a couple of miles as it was pretty warm.

Not he's talking like an athlete.

Btw, that is a serious effort walking that distance. Well done.

Thought it was way quicker than that, but was mostly pretty comfortable.

I MIGHT have just forced.my knee though scrambling to catch a train.
Felt something sharp in I think the hamstring tendon as I ran into a car at a junction.
Not sure yet. Keeping fingers crossed!

Last time I did my hamstring tendon it took 5 years to heal, so....

No idea how I have ever run faster than that.
I was like Seb Coe the final 800m.

Do you ever do any shorter, quicker runs? Good way of getting your pace up.

My distances are 8k, 5k 3k.

I have the 'pace' there in theory to do a faster time, it's just having the gas to use it for long enough.

If I did the whole 5k at the pace I did the last 800 at today I'd be taking several minutes off the time.

Tbh I have a cap on my top speed anyway. I used to try to finish with a hard sprint, but I found it was injuring my tummy muscles, so I don't in any circumstances (unless it was life or death) ever run as fast as I possibly could. I've kind of worked out where the safe limit is.

Short fast runs are also good for stamina. With that being said my current 5K time would probably be near 40 minutes

You'd be doing well to do 5k in 40 minutes without being used to significant exercise I reckon.

I reckon my walking speed is maybe say 3.25 mph.

A jogging speed maybe....5.5mph.

starting out you might be jogging 20% of the time.

I reckon that gives an average pace of 3.9mph, or say 4mph.

That's about 6.4km per hour.

Which is about 47 minutes for 5k (if I've got my sums and assumptions right).

I reckon that gives an average speed of exactly

scrub the last line of that

47 minutes is my estimate.

that's a full minute off. 2 seconds faster than my best time last year (which was on a flatter course).

annoyingly 7 seconds outside my target.

out in 12.20. 10 seconds gasp.. back in 12.36.

wow, I'm amazed by that time!!!

well done!

how do you go from almost zero exercise to trotting (5k) for 32 minutes without a break?????

That's supposed to take about 2 months of regular exercise!!!

That is a completely respectable time.

Anyway, good for you and well done.

Next one will be quicker!

32.35 is no trot btw, that is a very respectable jog.
