Manchester City may allow striker Emmanuel Adebayor to leave for nothing following reports that his cut-price move to Spurs is off.
Tottenham were expected to complete a cut price £6m deal for the striker that City value at £12m, but the move looks to have collapsed due to his demands regarding personal terms, Adebayor does not want to move for less than his £170,000 a week wages.
City are desperate to land Arsenal's Robin van Persie but know there is no chance of that happening whilst Adebayor is still at Eastlands.
They thought they had a deal with Spurs, but now feel that they have backtracked over the move.
A City insider told the Daily Mirror: "It was felt there was two ways to handle Adebayor. Either we could ask for a fee in excess of £10m knowing we would have to spend perhaps half of that compensating the player for lost earnings.
"Or, by asking £6m, the buying club would be able to offer wages acceptable to Adebayor.
"Tottenham knew that was our intention. Now they want us to accept the lower fee and pay Adebayor off.
"Basically they want a player who scored the goals that took them to fourth place in the Premier League last season for nothing."
