Honours

I have posted this on the Athletics board as I presume it will be seen by the most here, but it applies to all of the Olympic sports.

Reading and hearing in the news this week that the Olympic gold medalists may not be rewarded with an honour in the Queens New Year list.

Now forgive me if I'm wrong, but have they not already been rewarded for their wins? The whole point of the gold medal is to reward the winner. Why is it necessary for them to be given a title, when (and this is my own personal view) being called an Olympic champion would be much more prestigious (perhaps not the correct word I'm looking for).

Well, the point of honours is to recognise a person's achievements and dedication to a particular field, going BEYOND what they've achieved in their field.

I think they should wait until at least middle age and was surprised that Dame Ellen MacArthur was honoured so young. It is something that come with age. What if Bradley turns into a slob after finishing his career? Now they have created a problem because they could be handing out lots of gongs and the public may not be comfortable with this. I mean Dame Laura Trott would be strange for one so young.

They hand out honours to anyone these days.I think maybe at most the queen should give some kind of certificate saying well done, but giving the status of dame or sir I think is inapproriate. If they have won several golds like redgrave then it I can understand why they would. But 1 or 2 gold medals, doesn't deserve it.
