Alan Shearer on Allen

Hi Guys,

Just wanted to canvass your opinion on Shearer's comments on Joe Allen on MOTD yesterday, for those who did not see it you can catch it here:

I basically he was stating that he was the master of sideways passing and never looks forward hence why his passing stats our good. I think a lot was said about Arteta too, especially last season, but as we saw today Arteta will take on that risky ball.

So What do you folks think?

Truth is though if Gerrard, Johnson or Shelveys chances had gone in we'd all be saying Allen played well.

People saying hes too slow on the ball dont understand that patient build up and keeping the ball is central to the philosophy BR is integrating.

A bit harsh IMO!

You could see several players calling for the ball, but not receiving it... Are these players not aware of Allen’s role or the system they train day in and day out to execute??

You are not gonna win games if you are trying to slow build in the 92nd minute!

Just to clarify, when I said Allen was a bit more conservative I meant in his passing not in his position on the pitch

I find comments like master of sideways passing incredibly annoying. Xavi is actually the master of sideways passing followed closely by Busquets and Alonso but would Shearer comment on them with a negative air? I doubt it.

Critism of Allen, who alongside Sterling and Johnson has been your best performer this season?

I am loving the logic.

To be fair, he probably would. He's quite dull, he's an absolute luddite in terms of how he thinks the game should be played, and he should be avoided at all costs.

However, he is pretty consistent with his idiocy. I'm fanatically opposed to watching analysis on BBC, but I caught some during the Euros; some team scored a header from a cross, and Shearer was just short of ripping off his shirt, jumping onto the table and screaming "F&#*ING 'AVE THAT UP YOU, YOU NANCY C*#&S, STICK YOUR SHORT PASSING UP YOUR ÄRSES!"

I think if he was being honest, he'd admit that if he had his way, every team would feature Andy Carroll, Kevin Nolan and Lee Cattermole.

Allen has to a do a bit more to convince me!

His current attrubites are excellent array of short rage passing!

He cant shoot, limited creativity (creating things) but very lively...

Not the missing link we need by a long stretch!

You don't always have to play a forward pass when it is on, but there were some clips when he had 3/4 choices to play a straight forward ball, but opted to play it sideways to someone in a worse off position. It was quite bizarre but nothing to look into, having said that I think he will do the same next weekend.
