Leeds United formed by Huddersfield merger

I did not realise, until I searched an old newspaper site, that Leeds United were formed in 1919 with a merger of Huddersfield Town and the old Leeds City Club.

"HUDDERSFIELD TO TRANSFER TO LEEDS.

Another first-class and football sensation arose yesterday in Leeds. It is proposed to transfer the Huddersfield Town Second Division League Club, with all its players and League privileges, to Leeds, to take the place vacated by the expulsion and disbandment of Leeds City. A meeting to be held to-night, when a final decision will be arrived at. Though proposals are not completed the transfer is said to be certain. The new club's directorate will comprise the directors of Huddersfield Town and the new Leeds United Club." (Western Daily Press - 7th Nov 1919)

...and another...

"HUDDERSFIELD AND LEEDS Agree to Join Forces.

At a crowded meeting of football enthusiasts held at Leeds last night to consider the proposed transference of the Huddersfield Town Club to Leeds, over which the Lord Mayor presided, the representatives of the Huddersfield Club announced that the club, in suggesting the transfer, were only actuated by the best interests of sport. The efforts of the Huddersfield Club had not been appreciated by the public as they deserved, and the players would be glad to play before a more appreciative crowd. It was decided to amalgamate the newly formed Leeds United Club with Huddersfield Town, the latter to take over the players and liabilities incurred already in forming the new Leeds club. The title of the club to play at Elland Road is be left to the League Management Committee, who will also select the names of Leeds directors join those of HuddersSeld. A deputation representing the new club will i wait on the Football League Management Committee on Tuesday, and if the transfer is approved the first home match will be against Coventry City next Saturday." (Dundee Courier - 8th Nov 1919)

As Huddersfield town still exist and in the 20's went on to build themselves a domestic legacy not dissimilar to ours I assume the merger didn't get further than the talks stage

What 'saved' Town at this time, and stopped the merger from going ahead was a rallying round of the townsfolk of Huddersfield to raise money and keep the club afloat.

Enough was raised to save the club and stop the merger and as such both clubs retained their original identities and have done ever since.

Herbert Chapman did not win 6 titles, he left Town after 2 titles were won and went to Arsenal...where he won 3. Towns' 3rd successive title was under the manager Cecil Potter, and then Jack Chaplin took over and took us to two 2nd places and 2 cup finals..

Not quite right about Herbert Chapman. He left Town to go to Arsenal after the first two of our titles. The three in a row was completed by Cecil Potter. Arsenal were runners up under Chapman that season.

Arsenal first won the title under Chapman in his 6th season with them1930/31 but were then runners up the following season. They did emulate (it's still to be bettered) Town's three in a row feat starting in 1932/33 but Chapman was only manager for the first two again due to his premature death you mention.

So a total of five titles but no three in a row

Tho' I missed the bit about Chapman popping his clogs and thus never actually winning 3 in a row with either club...

Also.....
..
& keep the club in the local area...the shares were £1 each, It might not seem much now, but would have been close on half a weeks wage for many at the time.

No way were we EVER going to be connected to L666s
