Fredy Guarin

Michael Carrick's injury leaves Manchester United manager David Moyes weighing up a possible swap deal involving Javier Hernandez and Inter Milan's Fredy Guarín

Manchester United’s calamitous season has been dealt a further blow with fears that Michael Carrick will be sidelined for a month with ankle ligament damage sustained during Wednesday’s Capital One Cup defeat by Sunderland.

With Wayne Rooney and Robin van Persie struggling to prove their fitness in time to return from injury against Cardiff City next Tuesday, the loss of Carrick has left United manager David Moyes contemplating midfield reinforcements before the transfer deadline a week today.

The England midfielder is expected to be sidelined for at least two weeks with the injury, which occurred when his right ankle gave way when landing on the Astroturf at the side of the Old Trafford pitch during the semi-final penalty-shoot out defeat. Initial tests suggest he will be out for up to a month, forcing him to miss the Premier League clash at Arsenal on Feb 12 and potentially the Champions League last-16 first-leg tie against Olympiakos in Athens 13 days later.

Having only recently returned from a six-week lay-off following surgery on an Achilles tendon problem, Carrick’s latest setback will force Moyes to delay plans to restore Phil Jones to his natural position at centre half.

And with Inter Milan keen to offer Colombian midfielder Fredy Guarín in exchange for Javier Hernández, Moyes is considering his options for the rest of the transfer window.

He sometimes makes the wrong choices, sometimes overplays, too often lacks composure in his finishing

---
These things happen about 9 times out of 10!
Even my girlfriend who likes Welbeck was getting pis sed off with him against Sunderland, he was woeful and when we have 2 of our main strikers out he really needed to step it up and so far he has been fairly average.

No they don't. Again, these are the perceptions of the frustrated fan who is desperate for something to happen. Do you really think he makes the wrong decision 9 times out of 10? Stuffs up scoring opportunities 9 times out of 10?

Ji Sung Park's Cousin, but what if Hernandez has had enough of being 4th choice?

Like I said, if he is happy to stay, we should be happy too.

If he isn't, then he could be used in a swap deal... Not sure if Guarin is the best option though.... Really don't know enough about him

Mex, do you rate Wilson higher than Will Keane?

I don't get to see much of the youngsters.

(TRS, same question to you if you happen upon this thread later!)
----------------------------------------------------------------------

yes, Keane is a natural goalscorer but for me Wilson has more to his game
----------------------------------------------------------------------

Dunno about that Mex. Keane has two good feet, is strong in the air, has got a good touch and can hold the ball up and bring other players into the game.

To me, he's missing a bit of strength on the ball, and you're right that Wilson is pacier, but Keane is a pretty rounded player already.

Erm, yes!

I swear the only type of goal he can score is a chip goal
If he scores any other type it is by pure fluke.
He needs to start drilling shots at the keeper more often, take the game by the scruff of the next (hate that saying), but its true. He has been our main striker now for how long, just over a month or something and he just relies on others too much, he needs to start creating stuff for himself, creating a yard of space, have a shot on goal. He would rather create a yard of space, think actually no I won't shoot and then passes it sideways and this continues on for a few minutes until we lose the ball.

Not sure how you can disagree with that to be honest.

I like Keane a lot but Wilson for me I really do think is going to become something very special providing he suffers no serious injuries which halt his development.

Keane like JSPC has said is a pretty well rounded forward minus the strength and he's not the quickest but technically he is very good.

Wilson on the other hand is so good with the ball at his feet in terms of dribbling at pace, close control and I don't think I've ever seen anyone so young possess as much composure in front of goal because the number of times I've watched him score the same type of goal where he simply rounds the keeper and slides the ball into an empty net is ridiculous and the ease in which he does it even after running nearly half the pitch beating players as though they don't even exist is just incredible.

Thanks TRS. Do you reckon there's any chance he'll be 'ready' ridiculously early like Rooney or is it more likely to be a few more years learning the trade in the reserves and the loan circuit?

At the moment I would say no. He's not played that much for the U21s this season, only 3 or 4 times I think although in those games he's done quite well and the rest of his appearances have been for the U18s and U19s so it's difficult to judge at this point based on mostly U18/U19 games how far he actually is from getting into the first team.

He'll need I think to bulk up a little bit more although not to the point that it becomes detrimental to his explosive pace of course. If he has the same sort of impact at U21 level as Januzaj had last season, first team involvement I'd like to think wouldn't be too far away.

We could take the steady approach like you say and give him time playing for the U21s and then eventually send him out on loan or if we feel he's ready, throw him into the first team earlier than is expected where he could relish the chance, flourish and never look back. Players react differently to different situations and the only way of knowing for sure is when you test them. If the manager and coaching staff think he's physically and mentally ready and he's showing the right attitude, it'll not be long before he gets his chance.

I'd hope that within the next season and a half, or perhaps the start of the 2015/16 season, he'll be knocking on the door of the first team.

The guy in my opinion will be fastracked like Januzaj hopefully. He and Keane both look great but Wilson just has that natural balance and composure despite being as quick as Usain Bolt

It's hard to actually find a weakness in his game and he even looks totally confortable with either foot

looks at have the abilities that Januzaj does only he's quicker and obviously knows where the goal is a little more being more of a cf

really excited about this kid just like we were about Adnan a couple of years back

Looks to have the abilities of januzaj that should say
