Phil Jones

I really don't get why some people are saying we should stick with him. He's regressed from when we got him. I know he's still young but he's showing absolutely no signs of improving.

I can't remember who it was against last season but it was towards the end of the season and within the space of a minute, he intercepted the ball when it was clearly going through to De Gea, then he sliced his clearance wide for a corner even though he had all the time in the world to clear it, then from the corner, he lost his marker who had a free header and really should of scored and whilst trying to get to his player he threw himself in the air and injured himself resulting in him going off.

This for me sums Jones up. No brain whatsoever and to top it off he's injured every five games or so. I'd start with Rojo over him and if he's not good enough we need to buy a new cb.

It really can't be that difficult to upgrade on Phil Jones. The guy is a calamity defender.

To put the age and experience of Jones in some sort of context, one of our best ever centre back partnerships, Bruce and Pallister joined our club at the ages of 26 and 24. Phil Jones is still ONLY 23

And has been at the club four years, hasnt improved one iota in that time. You cant just give players unlimited time to prove themsleves thats ludicrous.

.............

We know.

He definately hasnt progressed as we would of liked or expected, thats for sure. But to grow at a club like Utd, especially in that position is difficult, it could be argued that he moved to soon in his career, his constant injuries havent helped obviously, adding to the fact that he has been thrown into different postions rather than being able to play and learn the role of a CB. People are writing him off far too early in his career.

Don't write him off. For me one of his main problems is the way he plays, it's an injury waiting to happen. He clatters in and sometimes needs to just jostle and stay on his feet, learn to read the game better. I still see potential there but he needs to play only CB and get a run where him and his partner and doing well, staying focussed and the team as a whole is on a run. Very big season for him.

I remember him doing breast stokes on the pitch just to head a ball that was literally sitting on grass.

...........

You mean the one that stopped Giroud from scoring a certain goal? He should never do that.

.....................

Achieving absolutely nothing besides being out of position.

......................

That is why you have a defensive midfielder.

Were you arguing with yourself? I actually wouldn't put it past you.

The OP's name has come up on my radar of numpty posts/posters too many times for it to be mere coincidence.

For the record, Jones is an immense defensively talented footballer. Just the kind that the club needs now and in the future.

cannot understand why there are currently a spate of posters on these boards that manage to both defend dross and simultaneously criticise the more positive aspects of the club's current staff.

mindboggling stupid people that leave me fearing for the future generations

I think both club and country have messed Jones around a little bit. At the age of 19 he showed real quality and promise at centre back. For the next 2/3 years he spent a lot of his time being shunted from position to position (RB, CB, DM, CM).

He clearly isn't an intelligent footballer like say a Rio or a Smalling and more an all action in your face defender and I do feel asking that sort of versatility from him at the highest level is a bit much, and it had really set him back.

However as the season progressed, his partnership with Smalling really did improve and there were plenty of games especially Dec onwards where he was bordering on very good if not excellent at times.

I do think its a bit soon to wash our hands of him. Could still make it, and if not could well become a very good back up defender!

Jones main problem imo, is his inability to time or even get his body in the correct position to make a tackle. Hence frequent injuries and mistimed awkward looking desperate tackled
Smalling, Blind and Rojo ahead of him as centre half's.
