I agree with the OP.

I don't personally think he is good enough, and agree that he has never really progressed.

At the beginning of last season there were a number of posters saying that "now is the time for the Jones-Smalling partnership to be given a chance, he can establish himself etc etc", and yet last season, which was ruined yet again by injury, he played in fewer games than he had averaged in the previous 3 seasons at United.

I'd have thought there are 2 positions on the field where you want consistency, and where frequent injuries cause a bigger problem, and that is GK and CB. So it is no moral judgment on Jones, but if he is injury-prone he needs to leave.

I still think he can make a good centre back, one thing he hasn't had is the luxury of a good run in the first team at centre back.

Until he gets that, it's impossible to tell. The potential is there, he's big, strong, reads the game and has pace. His problem is decision making, as with a lot of inexperienced centre backs.

I really don't get why some people are saying we should stick with him.

...............

Probably due to a lack of footy knowledge.

The guy is only 23.... How many CBs are the finished product at that age?

More than happy to see how he does, this season.

We were in for him before you signed him. Bullet dodged it seems.

Jones is still very young. He has time to develop his game and become a top class CB, but at the moment he isn't good enough to be a first choice CB in team aspiring to win the PL.

You took plenty more bullets though.

Fair point JSP but has he shown you anything to suggest he'll grow into a top class cb for us? I really don't see it.

Greatness can never be judged at Loftus Road in a routine victory, but the pace and power shown by Jones in west London was further confirmation that, despite the rough edges that have been all too obvious in United's Premier League campaign and their Champions League failure, this is one of the game's gems just waiting to be fully polished.

In time the comparisons will stop and Jones will not be the "new" anyone and simply become, well, the first Phil Jones, a young man superbly developed at Blackburn Rovers and taken on to the next stage of his career by Manchester United.

But the only way he will ever do so, is playing football. I honestly believe a season of Smalling & Jones at centre back together will give us all the answers we need. If at that point there is no sign of potential, then we replace them.

He may well have developed far better at Anfield, Mamba. In all likely hood he would have only been played in one position and stuck to it.

It isn't like you have had any better centre backs since we bought him either.

I'm willing to give him another season. He's young, showed great potential in the past (albeit he hasn't progressed much) and hasn't had a decent run in the first team due to injuries and being played out of position.

People are so quick to write him off, get a grip, he's 23. If anyone should be written off it's Evans.

I will admit that this coming season is probably his last chance to convince fans why he should be 1st choice, but he should at least be given the chance.

Why hasn't West Broms move for Evans gone through yet

posted on 28/7/15

Jones will get plenty of game time as the third choice CB. Its just a matter of time before Smalling pick up an injury, same goes for Rojo as well

posted on 28/7/15

Lol Evans has been written off by everybody. That's not even up for discussion anymore.

I think he has shown quite a few qualities, when given a run as a CB... I thought he performed well towards the end of last season when him and Mike Smalling got a good run together.

He is strong, good with the ball, decent in the air... and a great headerer of the ball along the ground... A much sought after quality!

To be fair most of our defenders have poor awareness, just look at the 3 goals Man City scored against us last season forgetting to mark aguero in the box.

Phil Jones - urrgh!

I remember him doing breast stokes on the pitch just to head a ball that was literally sitting on grass. And those pointless headless chicken runs up the pitch only to panic and give the ball away.

Achieving absolutely nothing besides being out of position.

Jones career so far isn't too shabby.

Bet people were as frustrated with Ramos when he was that age. Bet his suspensions were as frustrating as Jones' injuries.

And I think David Moyes has a lot to answer for in his perceived lack of development.,

I think, since last year, Jones has improved. But in Moyes' year, he went backwards, so Jones is still at the level he was when he won the Premiership whilst playing everywhere but his natural position.

Could easily replace Jones with Smalling in the above

...........

You mean the one that stopped Giroud from scoring a certain goal? He should never do that.

That is why you have a defensive midfielder.

I'm willing to give our current CB another chance this season, though I have stronger doubts over Evans than the others.
One thing which is a major positive is that we finally have a stronger midfield infront of them.Schneiderlin especially is more physically dominant than Carrick,Blind and Herrera will ever be.
